{"id":37820,"date":"2016-02-25T19:45:54","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T23:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37820"},"modified":"2016-02-25T19:45:54","modified_gmt":"2016-02-25T23:45:54","slug":"brock-president-applauds-ontario-budget-announcements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/brock-president-applauds-ontario-budget-announcements\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock president applauds Ontario budget announcements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saying a lack of financial resources should never be a barrier for post-secondary education, Brock University President Jack Lightstone applauds the Ontario government\u2019s budget announcements made Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights of the 2016 Ontario Budget was the Ontario Student Grant, which will cover the cost of tuition for students from households making less than $50,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a real focus on making university education affordable to those who have the least means to afford it and I think that\u2019s an excellent thing,\u201d Lightstone says. \u201cWhatever barriers there are for people to go to university, lack of money shouldn\u2019t be one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to 2012 Statistics Canada data, the average household income in Niagara was just over $68,000, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/daily-quotidien\/140723\/t140723c001-eng.htm\">making it one of the lowest census metropolitan areas in Canada<\/a>. For single-parent families, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagararegion.ca\/social-services\/technical-report\/demographics-report.aspx\">the average was around $37,000, and for one-person families, the average was less than $26,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www12.statcan.gc.ca\/nhs-enm\/2011\/dp-pd\/prof\/details\/page.cfm?Lang=E&amp;Geo1=CMA&amp;Code1=539&amp;Data=Count&amp;SearchText=St.%20Catharines&amp;SearchType=Begins&amp;SearchPR=01&amp;A1=Income%20of%20households&amp;B1=Families%20and%20households&amp;Custom=&amp;amp;TABID=1\">About 70,000 households in Niagara, or 43 per cent of all households, earn less than $50,000 per year<\/a>, meaning the financial barrier for post-secondary education would be eliminated for a large portion of the Niagara population.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario tuition fees are some of the highest in the country. The budget document says families earning $30,000 or less have about a one-in-three chance of going to post-secondary institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s budget announcement also included plans to continue working toward bringing daily GO Train service to more regions, including Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>That expansion would be a \u201chuge advantage in the recruitment efforts,\u201d\u00a0for Brock University and Niagara College, Lightstone says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe areas on the western side of the GTA and Hamilton are some of the most important areas from which we draw our student body,\u201d says Lightstone. \u201cWhen we ask students why they didn\u2019t come to Brock, they often say it\u2019s because it\u2019s too far.
