{"id":37741,"date":"2016-02-19T08:41:05","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T12:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37741"},"modified":"2016-02-19T17:43:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-19T21:43:00","slug":"hamilton-campus-hosts-career-information-day-and-mini-tech-showcase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/hamilton-campus-hosts-career-information-day-and-mini-tech-showcase\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamilton Campus hosts Career Information Day and Mini Tech Showcase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 500 teacher candidates, 35 school boards, schools, recruiters and professional agencies tag-teamed with eight technology vendors for a unique day of \u201cnext steps\u201d at Brock\u2019s Hamilton campus.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the v Hamilton campus was flooded with concurrent, consecutive, and even graduate students who were seeking information, advice, and guidance from local, provincial, national, and international teaching representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Buchanan, partnership coordinator in the Department of Teacher Education, attributes the strength of the relationships that have been built over time with these educational partners as one of the main contributors for a fruitful event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the successes of this career fair is that Brock has extremely strong partnerships across the province as well as across Canada,\u201d said Buchanan. \u201cWe have people from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec coming to hire our teacher candidates, as well as international schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reputation of Brock\u2019s Faculty of Education and its teacher candidates continues to thrive, evidenced by the attendance of David Orr, supervisor of recruitment and human resources at the Calgary Catholic School Board, whose decision to attend the event was strongly driven by Brock\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very impressed with the students \u2013 they are prepared, professional and are asking the right questions,\u201d said Orr. \u201cThis is the first time we\u2019ve been here and your reputation for your education program is very strong, it\u2019s what drew me here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most teacher candidates were focused on future employment, diligently gathering information to make an informed decision that not only met their needs, but their prospective employers as well.<\/p>\n<p>Concurrent Education students Brooklyn Agnoluzzi and Mitch Delle Monache paired up for the day, hoping to gain insight into what their future might look like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to actually talk to a representative face to face,\u201d said Agnoluzzi. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to get to know the different school boards and what they have to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody seems to be interested when you say you\u2019re from Brock,\u201d said Delle Monache. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to see what\u2019s offered from some of the boards [outside of Ontario], there\u2019s a lot to think about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other students, who were less focused on immediate employment, were connecting with representatives from Graduate Studies, the Centre for Continuing Teacher Education, and the Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario, as they plan for ongoing learning after graduating this spring.<\/p>\n<p>On site to support students were representatives from Career Services.
