{"id":37620,"date":"2016-02-09T12:33:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T16:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37620"},"modified":"2016-02-10T16:54:07","modified_gmt":"2016-02-10T20:54:07","slug":"podcast-how-do-we-boost-healthy-eating-in-niagara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/podcast-how-do-we-boost-healthy-eating-in-niagara\/","title":{"rendered":"PODCAST: How do we boost healthy eating in Niagara?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For families aiming to eat healthy meals now and in the long term, Wendy Ward, Canada Research Chair in Bone and Muscle Development, has some great advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet kids cooking early,\u201d she says. \u201cSit them down at the island, give them some carrots or beans to chop, and they\u2019ll just start chatting away, telling you about their day, and I can tell them more about my day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward, kinesiology professor at Brock University, joins Kim Oullette in tackling the question: How do we boost healthy eating in Niagara?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/246211811&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That it is vitally important to consistently eat whole foods rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is without dispute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthy eating supports healthy growth and development and avoidance of disease and (disease-)like conditions throughout the life cycle,\u201d says Oullette, a registered dietitian in the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention unit of Niagara Region\u2019s Public Health Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some linkages showing that, if Vitamin D deficiency is occurring in mothers during pregnancy, there are long-term implications to the bone health of the infant,\u201d says Ward, adding these impacts can be seen in adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>But eating well is easier said than done, given our busy schedules, heavy-duty advertising campaigns of the fast food industry, and, in some cases, the expense of fresh foods.<\/p>\n<p>In their podcast, Ward and Ouellette explore the meaning of \u201cnutrition,\u201d what constitutes a healthy diet and the impacts that various foods and nutrients have on our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>They also explain the Canada Food Guide and highlight supports \u2013 such as EatRight Ontario, which operates a 1-877-510-5102 hotline where callers can speak to a registered dietitian for free \u2013 to help families and individuals make better food choices.<\/p>\n<p>The podcast also describes several Niagara-specific initiatives to educate Niagarans or provide greater access to healthy foods.
