{"id":37586,"date":"2016-02-05T15:09:21","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T19:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37586"},"modified":"2016-02-05T15:15:34","modified_gmt":"2016-02-05T19:15:34","slug":"unicef-brock-holding-roses-for-refugees-fundraiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/unicef-brock-holding-roses-for-refugees-fundraiser\/","title":{"rendered":"Unicef Brock holding Roses for Refugees fundraiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria Emiko has witnessed the work Unicef does around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock University international student from Nigeria often saw Unicef volunteers handing out medical supplies, giving vaccinations and providing educational materials.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why when he came to Brock to study economics, he decided to join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brockunicef\/\" target=\"_blank\">Unicef Brock<\/a>, a chapter of Unicef Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to help people,\u201d he said, adding the organization allows him to be a philanthropist with real impact.<\/p>\n<p>Unicef Brock is holding a fundraiser Feb. 12 called <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/Unicef\/calendar\/details\/43159\" target=\"_blank\">Roses For Refugees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The organization\u2019s co-president Chantal Christian said half of the money raised at the fundraiser will go to Unicef and the rest will be donated to a local private sponsorship group that is helping a Syrian refugee family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than just focusing on the international relief, we want to also help people in our own community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The roses are being sold just in time for Valentine\u2019s Day and there will be plenty of red ones available along with other assorted colours.<\/p>\n<p>They sell for $3 each, six for $15 or a dozen for $30.<\/p>\n<p>Unicef Brock will have a table set up in A-block of Mackenzie Chown starting at 10 a.m. on Feb. 12. They\u2019ll be there until the roses, bought with a donation from the Brock University Students\u2019 Union, are sold out.<\/p>\n<p>Emiko and Christian said the group hopes to raise $1,000. They are confident the Brock community will support the fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe usually sell out,\u201d Christian said. \u201cA lot of times Brock staff and students come and just donate money and don\u2019t even take a rose.\u201d<br \/>\nThe group wanted to raise $3,000 during the 2015-16 school year.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve far surpassed that already, raising $8,000 in November when Emiko and three other members \u2014 Patrick Foster, Jad Nasser and on the last day of the three-day journey Stephanie Mannella \u2014 walked from Brock to Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>That fundraising effort raised $4,000 and the government matched the funds.
