{"id":37579,"date":"2016-02-05T12:32:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T16:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37579"},"modified":"2016-02-05T12:37:49","modified_gmt":"2016-02-05T16:37:49","slug":"familiar-face-new-head-of-busu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/familiar-face-new-head-of-busu\/","title":{"rendered":"Familiar face new head of BUSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Chris Green\u2019s connection to the Brock University Students\u2019 Union started long before he became the organization\u2019s new general manager last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a third-year political science student at Brock, Green (BA \u201907) ran an election campaign for his friend who wanted to be a BUSU executive. It was the first time he\u2019d heard of the student union.<\/p>\n<p>While his friend didn\u2019t win, the campaign connected Green to BUSU and in 2004 he was elected to the Brock University Students\u2019 Administrative Council, a branch of the student union.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"pull-quote\">The administration here is student-focused and we work together to provide a great student experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After serving for two years, he applied for a staff position with BUSU and worked his way from election officer to executive assistant before moving into the role of manager of marketing and communications in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is home away from home for me,\u201d said the life-long St. Catharines resident.<\/p>\n<p>Green said Brock students are fortunate that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.busu.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">BUSU<\/a> has a good relationship with University administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe administration here is student-focused and we work together to provide a great student experience,\u201d he said. \u201cSome schools have rocky relationships but not Brock. It works as a Brock community &#8211; we all have different mandates but we all have the same goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Green said students elected to BUSU and the support staff work to provide the programs and services students want in the most cost-effective and student-centred way possible.<\/p>\n<p>He said the key priorities of BUSU include inter-municipal transit, infrastructure improvements, improving access to education through lobbying efforts and providing student services and student spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Students pay a per credit fee to BUSU of $18.69 as well as a club levy, green levy and contribute to a strategic expansion fund.<\/p>\n<p>Turnover is a natural part of BUSU \u2013 there\u2019s an election every year for the president and three vice-president positions as well as seats on the board of directors.
