{"id":37471,"date":"2016-02-01T09:59:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T13:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37471"},"modified":"2016-02-03T17:27:13","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T21:27:13","slug":"the-echoes-of-chloe-cooley-screening-tonight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/02\/the-echoes-of-chloe-cooley-screening-tonight\/","title":{"rendered":"The Echoes of Chloe Cooley screening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In celebration of African Heritage Month, the Brock African Heritage Recognition Committee (BAHRC)\u00a0is showing the film<em>\u00a0\u201c<\/em><em>The Echoes of Chloe Cooley.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The screening is Monday, Feb. 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Pond Inlet.<\/p>\n<p>This short\u00a0documentary produced by Andrea Conte tells the unknown story of Chloe Cooley &#8211; an enslaved woman of African descent in Upper Canada &#8211;\u00a0who was violently beaten, bound, and thrown in a boat to be sold by her owner back to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses brought her screams of protest before the Canadian government, who moved to pass the 1793 Act to Limit Slavery, banning the importation of enslaved people to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>While the law freed no one, it made Canada a refugee state for people escaping slavery from the US. So began the Underground Railroad movement northward.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is welcome to attend.
