{"id":37458,"date":"2016-01-29T15:27:47","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T19:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37458"},"modified":"2016-02-02T16:07:51","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T20:07:51","slug":"alzheimers-walk-to-make-memories-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/01\/alzheimers-walk-to-make-memories-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Alzheimer&#8217;s walk to make memories matter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">The Walk for Alzheimer\u2019s being held at Brock University Sunday is aiming to raise $85,000 for the local organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>More than 300 walkers are expected to attend the annual event, said Terry McDougall, director of fund development for the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the funds we raise stay in Niagara Region,\u201d she said. This will be Brock&#8217;s fourth time hosting the walk. In the past three years, the walks\u00a0have raised more than $200,000, McDougall said.<\/p>\n<p>There are 8,962 people living with dementia in Niagara and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease accounts for 64 per cent of cases, McDougall said.<\/p>\n<p>The walk is one of the society\u2019s biggest fundraisers.<\/p>\n<p>But, it\u2019s about more than raising money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also about education and awareness,\u201d said McDougall.<\/p>\n<p>The indoor walk will take participants to stations promoting information about everything from making choices and brain teasers to therapy dogs and living a healthy lifestyle.<br \/>\n\u201cWalkers receive goodies along the route and information about maintaining a healthy brain,\u201d said Kristen Smith, Manager of Student and Community Outreach. \u201cIt\u2019s interactive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said hosting the event at Brock is a great way to reach out to the community and get students and staff involved.<\/p>\n<p>McDougall said a new feature this year is an art show in the Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre showcasing artwork by people with dementia and their caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are doing a progressive painting so there will be a blank canvas and people will be invited to leave their mark,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In the Ian Beddis Gym, there will be a health fair with information about community services and supports, McDougall added.<\/p>\n<p>Registration for the event begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 with the walk starting at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The event takes place in Brock\u2019s Walker Complex.
