{"id":37178,"date":"2016-01-11T16:33:24","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T20:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37178"},"modified":"2018-12-20T11:37:49","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:37:49","slug":"new-study-shows-impact-of-brocks-developmental-psychology-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/01\/new-study-shows-impact-of-brocks-developmental-psychology-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"New study shows impact of Brock\u2019s Developmental Psychology researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study published Monday, Jan. 11 in <em>Canadian Psychology\/Psychologie canadienne<\/em> ranks Brock University\u2019s developmental psychology researchers among the most productive and most frequently cited in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The study <a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=browsePA.ofp&amp;jcode=cap\">(found here)<\/a> examines the research productivity and impact of Canadian developmental psychology programs that offer graduate degrees. It was designed to help potential graduate students determine the richness of research environments at different institutions based on hard data.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s two lead authors, Ann Farrell and Thalia Semplonius, are themselves graduate students \u2014 both PhD students in Brock\u2019s Department of Psychology.<\/p>\n<p>The two students say they conducted the research because existing studies focus on psychology departments in general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no studies that provide information specifically on the developmental psychology stream in Canada,\u201d Farrell says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The paper provides insight into recent\u00a0research productivity and the impact of developmental psychology programs in Canada,\u201d adds Semplonius.<br \/>\n\u201cIt can be used as a potential\u00a0resource for graduate school\u00a0applicants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A previous study of Canadian psychology departments from 2003 to 2008 recognized Brock as being one of the top 10 most productive departments in Canada. This new research, based on data from 2009 to 2013 and focusing on the developmental psychology stream, shows Brock ranking third, behind McMaster and Dalhousie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis manuscript highlights the remarkable strength of developmental psychology at Brock University, a strength shared across the entire department,\u201d says department chair and paper co-author Catherine Mondloch.<\/p>\n<p>She says the breadth and significance of topics being investigated, such as children\u2019s lie-telling, prospective memory in children and older adults, adolescent development, bullying, face recognition, and emotion perception, enriches the graduate programs.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Dunk, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, believes the numbers demonstrate the high quality and productivity of Brock&#8217;s developmental psychologists. \u201cResearchers in the Department of Psychology, including the graduate students, are among the very best in Canada.
