There are 168 stairs in the James A. Gibson Library <\/span>and staff are<\/span> encouraging students to use them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with the health benefits, prizes are being offered during the <\/span>#LibraryStairsChallenge<\/span> running Jan. 11-Feb. 11.<\/span><\/p>\n

The contest is a fun way to promote using the library stairs rather than the busy, crowded and often overloaded elevators.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are becoming victims of our <\/span>own success. The Library <\/span>is a very popular place to study and work,\u201d said Interim University Librarian Jonathan Younker.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe really want to encourage people to take the stairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He said the sixth-floor small group study space is really popular and has increased elevator traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are often lineups for the <\/span>L<\/span>ibrary\u2019s two elevators.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an incentive to walk a few flights, <\/span>all <\/span>stair climbers will be entered in weekly prize draws. <\/span>A Fitbit –\u00a0donated by the Campus Store – will be awarded to one grand prize winner on Feb. 12<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

QR Codes <\/span>posted in the library stairwell <\/span>will be used so students can track their progress, see the leaderboard and be entered into the weekly <\/span>and grand prize <\/span>draws, said Evelyn Smith, the <\/span>L<\/span>ibrary\u2019s marketing and communications co-ordinator.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you choose the stairs, you might be rewarded,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Motivating chalk messages dot the walls in the stairwell, <\/span>and<\/span> run<\/span> from the 2nd to 10th floors, to help keep students climbing rather than riding.<\/span><\/p>\n

The hashtag #<\/span>L<\/span>ibrary<\/span>S<\/span>tair<\/span>sC<\/span>hallenge is being used for those participating in the contest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Visit the<\/span>\u00a0challenge website<\/a> for\u00a0background information, a recommended QR code scanner and tracking via the leaderboard.<\/p>\n

Find the library stairs by following Boomer\u2019s paw prints which lead from the elevator waiting area to the stairwell door.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t
