{"id":37028,"date":"2015-12-21T12:40:40","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T16:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=37028"},"modified":"2015-12-21T12:40:40","modified_gmt":"2015-12-21T16:40:40","slug":"brock-students-inspire-youth-to-consider-stem-subjects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/12\/brock-students-inspire-youth-to-consider-stem-subjects\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock students inspire youth to consider STEM subjects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new series of after-school programs being launched at Brock University is aimed at encouraging Niagara youth to develop 21<sup>st<\/sup> century skills such as creativity, critical thinking and co-operation while being exposed to STEM subject areas.<\/p>\n<p>With educators across the country expanding their focus from Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programming to include the Arts (STEAM), Brock\u2019s Youth University is launching Innovation Labs.<\/p>\n<p>Devin Bright, a curriculum specialist with Youth University, said kids might not even notice they are learning while Brock students lead them through activities where they can experiment with 3D printing, design their own video game or transform a stuffed animal with EV3 robotics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lab gives young people a unique opportunity to learn skills and knowledge and then apply their learning in a hands-on setting,\u201d Bright said.<\/p>\n<p>The Innovation Labs include robotics kits, Arduino coding tools, 3D printing, building materials, and other equipment. The programs take place on campus in computer labs, science labs and seminar spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Youth University Director Kate Cassidy said the STEAM programming helps Canadian youths prepare for jobs in a global economy rooted in innovation and technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents increasingly need more in-depth knowledge of technology, math and science, plus the ability to integrate and apply that knowledge in creative ways to solve real-life problems \u2013 that\u2019s where the arts come in,\u201d Cassidy said. \u201cIt\u2019s important to start early. We want to help prepare young people for the future they will face, where critical thinking, innovation and entrepreneurship\u2014along with STEAM areas\u2014will be key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young people in Grades 3-8 can sign up for <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/38840\">Toy Hacking<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/38840\">Art &amp; Architecture<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/38840\">Math in Motion<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/38840\">RPG Gamemaker<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/38840\">Math Club<\/a> sessions.
