{"id":36146,"date":"2015-10-27T14:58:16","date_gmt":"2015-10-27T18:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=36146"},"modified":"2015-11-02T16:26:08","modified_gmt":"2015-11-02T20:26:08","slug":"fellowship-aimed-at-connection-between-museums-and-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/10\/fellowship-aimed-at-connection-between-museums-and-classrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Fellowship aimed at connection between museums and classrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a few months, Tyler Marr will realize an opportunity he has been waiting for since 2012 &#8211; working with\u00a0the Juno Beach Centre.<\/p>\n<p>In March of next year \u2013 as a result of being named the recipient of one of the two inaugural <a href=\"http:\/\/www.junobeach.org\/fellowship\/\" target=\"_blank\">Juno Beach Centre Fellowships<\/a> \u2013 Marr will visit the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France, to study the connection between museums and classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very excited to be able to work with the centre and contribute to their educational programming,\u201d says Marr. \u201cAs part of this Fellowship, I will have the opportunity to travel to the centre and it will be nice to see what has changed since I visited the site last.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having first went to\u00a0the Juno Beach Centre in June of 2012 while participating in the Canadian Battlefield Foundation\u2019s 2012 Study Tour, Marr has been looking for the opportunity to become more active in the organization, and his recent fellowship has allowed him to do just that.<\/p>\n<p>A born-and-raised Niagara resident, Marr is a long-term occasional secondary teacher with the District School Board of Niagara with an interest in museum history, which has been the focus of his ongoing Masters of Education degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExperiential education is a very important aspect of education that engages students and enriches the learning at all levels,\u201d says Marr. \u201cEspecially in the Niagara Region, we have a wealth of local history that should be shared in the classrooms and numerous local museums that can contribute to this. My research focuses on the ways that secondary students can receive experiential education through the use of museums in Niagara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marr\u2019s advisor, <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/education\/directory\/teachered\/pvietgen\" target=\"_blank\">Associate Professor Peter Vietgen<\/a>, acknowledges the dedication and important work being done by Marr to help shape the ways students absorb history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tyler is a most deserving\u00a0recipient of this prestigious fellowship,\u201d says Vietgen. \u201cHis passion\u00a0and commitment\u00a0to history education has been clearly evident along every step of his graduate work.
