{"id":35901,"date":"2015-10-15T10:33:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T14:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=35901"},"modified":"2015-10-15T10:33:14","modified_gmt":"2015-10-15T14:33:14","slug":"brock-increases-position-in-national-research-funding-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/10\/brock-increases-position-in-national-research-funding-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock increases position in national research funding report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University has moved up the ranks in a yearly national report that tracks increases in university research funding and other research and development performance indicators.<\/p>\n<p>In this year\u2019s Research Infosource report, released Oct. 15, Brock University scores 5<sup>th<\/sup> place in the Top 10 Universities by Growth section, a list of 10 universities across Canada that have seen the greatest increases in research funding over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Brock ranked 9<sup>th<\/sup> out of 10 on that list.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Brock ranks 37 on Canada\u2019s Top 50 Research Universities List, an increase of four positions over last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock\u2019s research income went up by 14.7 per cent,\u201d Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc., tells <em>The Brock News.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo put that in perspective, the national total for research income was down by about 1.6 per cent, so Brock has really outpaced the rest of the group,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Freedman credits Brock\u2019s Vice President Research Gary Libben and his staff \u201cfor really putting research on the Brock agenda and getting everybody together on the same page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur researchers and students continue to push the boundaries of knowledge as they make discoveries that benefit our community and the world around us,\u201d says Libben.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs they are doing so, we vigorously pursue diverse funding sources that go beyond the traditional federal government agencies. And, we have worked to increase the number of researchers applying for federal government grants and other funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data for the Research Infosource report, titled <em>Canada\u2019s Innovation Leaders<\/em>, was drawn from Statistics Canada during the 2014 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of Brock\u2019s research funding announcements during that time include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>two awards of more than $300,000 under the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/01\/brock-researchers-receive-insight-grants-from-sshrc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council\u2019s Insight Grant program<\/a><\/li>\n<li>an award of more than $500,000 from the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/04\/cihr-awards-brock-university-researchers-more-than-585000\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Institutes of Health Research<\/a><\/li>\n<li>two <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/08\/banting-postdoctoral-fellowships-bring-two-top-scholars-to-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Canada&#8217;s Innovation Leaders report tracks research and development performance in research universities, hospitals and colleges.
