It was the academic trajectory she\u2019d always been on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, that one course changed the course of Mathany\u2019s professional life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was studying Health Sciences at Western and in that program we took a Kinesiology course which had a sport business element to it,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI loved the idea of working in business but still maintaining a connection to sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After her first year, she left Western and enrolled in the course that merged her new-found love of business and her passion for sports.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"pull-quote\">\u201cThe Sports Management (SPMA) program at Brock is one of the most respected in Canada and the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sports Management (SPMA) program at Brock is one of the most respected in Canada and the United States,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s smaller class sizes and the opportunity to get direct-learning support from professors who care and have real experience in the field drew Mathany to the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted a degree that had practical application and set me up for a career that I could feel really passionate about,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Mission accomplished. Mathany is currently the Director of Strategic Partnerships with the Canadian Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been really lucky to find the career path I have,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She was recently honoured by the Brock University Alumni Association with a 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, being able to represent sport management is really quite an honour, especially given the roster of incredible alumni we have,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from Brock in 2005 with an Honour\u2019s Bachelor of Sport Management, Mathany pursued her Master\u2019s of Business Administration at Wilfred Laurier University, graduating in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>While at Brock, Mathany developed herself through various volunteer roles to enhance\u00a0her sport industry network. In 2007, she became account manager with Government Partnerships and Commercial Rights Management with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.<\/p>\n<p>She said her time with the Vancouver committee was \u201clife-changing\u201d as it opened up opportunities and prepared her for her role with the Canadian Olympic Committee, where she oversees the commercial interests of the organization.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35864\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/erin-mathany.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35864\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-35864\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/erin-mathany-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Erin Mathany\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Mathany<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While Toronto is not bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Mathany says the COC is supportive of bringing the summer games to Canada in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hopeful that in my lifetime, this country will host another Olympics,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She points to the 217 medals Canada earned at the Pan Am games, second only to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw an incredible outpouring of support for our summer sports,\u201d she says. \u201cIt will create tremendous momentum going into Rio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past decade, Mathany\u2019s strong connection to Brock has continued.<\/p>\n<p>She gives back because she feels she was given so much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only reason I am in the position I\u2019m in is because of the support of the faculty in the sport management program,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She has chaired the Sport Management Alumni Board since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cErin is tireless in her advocacy and support of our program,\u201d says associate professor Kirsty Spence. \u201cShe provides an example for all students and women in our program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said Mathany also played a pivotal role in developing the Alumni Liaison Board of Directors in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a significant number of alumni working in the sport industry, creating a community of support for the student upon graduation,\u201d Mathany says. \u201cMy favorite part of the program was hearing from and being inspired by guest speakers coming from the industry and our alumni network who shaped what I wanted to strive for and achieve in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Mathany is the one inspiring students in the popular Brock program.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35368\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/alumnigradawards.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35368\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-35368 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/alumnigradawards-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Dan McGrath, bottom left, was named this year's top alumnus by Brock University Alumni Association.
