{"id":35821,"date":"2015-10-08T13:24:46","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T17:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=35821"},"modified":"2015-10-08T16:01:17","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T20:01:17","slug":"brock-researchers-weigh-in-on-national-climate-action-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/10\/brock-researchers-weigh-in-on-national-climate-action-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock researchers weigh in on national climate action plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Brock University climate change researchers are among dozens of experts contributing to a national report, Acting on Climate Change: Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians, released in Toronto Oct. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Biologists Liette Vasseur and Gary Pickering co-authored a paper, \u201cFeeding the Social Animal: How to Engage Canadians in Climate Change Mitigation,\u201d which is included in the national report.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC) paper explores a wide range of beliefs and attitudes about climate change.<\/p>\n<p>These include: an excessive trust that technology will solve all problems associated with climate change; the belief that climate change is a natural phenomenon not caused by human activity; and a fear of \u201clooking foolish\u201d by being the only ones to take pro-environment actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate change psychology answers some baseline questions from which the \u2018what to do\u2019 will follow,\u201d said Pickering. \u201cUnderstanding the specific psycho-social barriers that prevent individuals from fully engaging in pro-environmental behaviour is critical to determining how best to mobilize Canadians toward climate change mitigation and adaptation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s report builds on an earlier climate action report \u2013 dubbed Canada\u2019s \u201cMarshall Plan\u201d for climate change \u2013 produced by the Sustainable Canada\u00a0Dialogues network of more than 60 scholars from over 30 universities across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cThe main goal of the report and the current Sustainability Dialogue movement is to encourage people from different disciplines to talk about the \u2018elephant in the room,\u2019 which is climate change,\u201d said Vasseur. \u201cPeople have to face the reality not only for themselves but for their children and grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope this new report will help lay the foundation for a country-wide consultation on socially acceptable ways to transition to a low-carbon society and economy, beginning immediately,\u201d said Taysha Palmer, a graduate student in Brock\u2019s Sustainability Science and Society program and a co-author on Acting on Climate Change: Solutions from Canadian Scholars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University climate change researchers are among dozens of experts contributing to a national report, Acting on Climate Change: Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians, released in Toronto Oct. 8.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":20718,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3319,1,5],"tags":[3456,794,3457,3231,3458],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35821"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=35821"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35821\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":35823,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35821\/revisions\/35823"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/20718"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=35821"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=35821"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=35821"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
