{"id":35478,"date":"2015-09-25T11:30:29","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T15:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=35478"},"modified":"2015-09-30T14:23:44","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T18:23:44","slug":"showcasing-brock-to-prospective-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/09\/showcasing-brock-to-prospective-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Showcasing Brock to prospective students at Ontario Universities&#8217; Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University is reaching out to tens of thousands of high school students this weekend during the Ontario Universities\u2019 Fair in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>A contingent of over 300 faculty, staff and students headed to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Friday morning for the three-day fair aimed at Grade 11 and 12 high school students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for us to shine and be top of mind,\u201d said Melissa Beamer, Manager of Recruitment Services. \u201cWe will be showcasing what makes Brock, Brock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Third-year concurrent education students Naomi Dinniwell and Teghan Hinksman are attending the fair to let students know how much they love Brock and why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are Brock ambassadors so our job is to promote Brock and convince students that Brock is where\u2019s it\u2019s at,\u201d Dinniwell said.<\/p>\n<p>Hinksman added: \u201cIt\u2019s not just a job, we believe it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added she loves the community feel on campus, and the staff is amazing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The professors are very student-oriented. They really care about their students,&#8221; Hinksman said.<\/p>\n<p>Beamer said recruiters are trying to get potential students to visit Brock \u2013 which almost always seals the deal. Brock University will be showcasing its programs, services and campus life to high school students during the three-day event.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faculty and staff get ready to board the Badger bus bound for the Ontario Universities&#8217; Fair.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beamer said 130,000 students and parents are expected to attend the fair over the weekend, most of which are from the Greater Toronto Area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical for us to reach students in the GTA,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s the only area with a growing demographic in terms of a prospective student population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Council of Ontario Universities, a demographic shift has meant a smaller university-age population that is expected to continue until 2021. It\u2019s a good way to meet a lot of incoming students,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to promote Brock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the fair, Brock has a 45&#215;45 booth with two walls of interactive media including the launch of the new Grape Stomp game. Presentations will also be offered hourly on a number of topics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo two universities in Ontario are alike, and the Ontario Universities\u2019 Fair can help high school students find the right fit for them,\u201d Dave Wallace, Executive Director of the Ontario Universities\u2019 Application Centre, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are thousands of academic programs to choose from at Ontario universities and at the fair prospective students can hear all about them directly from faculty, staff, alumni and current students. We encourage everyone to come and explore a world of options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beamer said the fair is the kickoff of the annual recruitment season.
