Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts debuted less than two weeks ago and is already getting rave reviews from students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s gorgeous. It has the right environment for the fine and performing arts \u2013 positive and accepting,\u201d said Leah Eichler, a first-year Brock University dramatic arts student from Brampton. \u201cIt\u2019s just a really great building and I feel really happy whenever I\u2019m in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35233\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/miwsfpaleaheichler.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35233\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35233\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/miwsfpaleaheichler-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Leah Eichler is a first-year drama student who is giving the facilities at the new MIWSFPA great reviews.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leah Eichler is a first-year drama student who is giving the facilities at the new MIWSFPA great reviews.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Much of the $45.5-million, 95,000-square-foot building was adapted from the late 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century textile mill known as the Canada Haircloth building.<\/p>\n<p>Inside there are new state-of-the-art spaces for Brock\u2019s art programs, including art studios, computer and learning commons, music practice rooms, multimedia and music cognition labs, a student gallery and a theatre production complex with a 235-seat theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Raizel Sugarman, a first-year dramatic arts student who recently finished three years in Brock\u2019s psychology program, said the blend of old and new brings a lot of character to the downtown campus.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35232\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/miwsfparaizelsugarman.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35232\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35232\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/miwsfparaizelsugarman-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Raizel Sugarman loves the mix of old and new at the MIWSFPA.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raizel Sugarman loves the mix of old and new at the MIWSFPA.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI like how it is refurbished,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First-year drama student Colin Williams said the space promotes creativity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis building really elevates an actor\u2019s potential,\u201d he said, adding there\u2019s a productive atmosphere in the building.<\/p>\n<p>Williams said he chose Brock because of its a co-op program and the \u201cnew space is an incredible bonus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Returning student Iain Beaumont couldn\u2019t be happier about the new downtown space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new building is a tremendous resource for the arts community here at Brock,\u201d he said. \u201cThere seems to be a little bit of everything for everyone under the arts umbrella: allowing us to be able to truly interact, share and collaborate with other departments for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until now, he said each arts\/humanities department felt detached due to a lack of proximity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new building with larger studio spaces, a learning commons and an overall grandeur has, in a sense, reinvigorated the Brock arts community into being passionate about what we are doing here \u2014 the way in which we work towards our futures has changed into having this overall sense of pride about the new space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beth Natale, Director of Recruitment and Retention, said the new campus is spectacular because of the space but also because of the connections it\u2019s creating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a game changer for us,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is absolutely transforming the student experience and it\u2019s really embedding them in the downtown arts community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The official opening of 15 Artists\u2019 Common is scheduled for Friday from 3-5 p.m., followed by an evening of entertainment produced and performed by Brock alumni. Tours are open to the public on Friday from 4-5 p.m. and Saturday from 1-3 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new Marilyn I.
