{"id":35144,"date":"2015-09-11T14:33:57","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T18:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=35144"},"modified":"2015-09-23T09:15:35","modified_gmt":"2015-09-23T13:15:35","slug":"first-year-students-getting-settled-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/09\/first-year-students-getting-settled-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"First-year students getting settled at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the fall term got underway this week, Brock University crackled with the energy of more than 18,000 students.\u00a0The hallways bustled with students coming and going, the vast parking lots jammed with cars and all 2,400 residence rooms were filled.<\/p>\n<p>It was a major change of pace for first-year students getting a taste of life on a busy university campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lectures are really scary, with something like 600 students,\u201d said first-year Community Health student Samantha Fenelon, 19. \u201cBut, I\u2019m already getting used to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catharines, Fenelon said she knew Brock was where she wanted to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really good school and everyone I know goes here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>St. Catharines Collegiate graduate Adeebah Zain, 18, chose Brock for its accounting program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the best school for accounting,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The first few days were confusing because of the size of campus and Zain said navigating her way around has taken some getting used to.\u00a0But, she\u2019s been impressed by how helpful everyone is, including her professors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might have heard that professors have no time but when you have questions, they are there to help you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>First-year Computer Science student Alexander Simonits, 18, of Hamilton, said he is at Brock because his program offers co-op placements.\u00a0He attended a few O-Week events and said he\u2019s already making friends and enjoying life in residence.\u00a0And, he\u2019s been pleasantly surprised by how much he likes his professors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35146\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/alexanderSimonits.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35146\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-35146 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/alexanderSimonits-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Alexander Simonits headshot\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexander Simonits<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey are more interesting than I thought. The professors seem really engaged in what they are talking about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Beth Natale, Director of Recruitment and Retention, said although classes are underway, it\u2019s not too late to register for the fall term.
