{"id":35082,"date":"2015-09-10T16:07:22","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T20:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=35082"},"modified":"2019-01-04T14:52:33","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T19:52:33","slug":"brock-professor-receives-highest-academic-honour-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/09\/brock-professor-receives-highest-academic-honour-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock professor receives highest academic honour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University History professor David Schimmelpenninck van der Oye has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), the country\u2019s top academic body.<\/p>\n<p>The historian is one of 87 academics to be named new Fellows for 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m delighted to see my work recognized by this distinction,\u201d said Schimmelpenninck. \u201cI\u2019m honoured to join this distinguished group of scholars. It will certainly help my work by putting it a bit more in the spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schimmelpenninck is an expert on Russian and Inner Asian history who has written a number of books, including <em>Russian Orientalism: Asia in the Russian Mind from Peter the Great to the Emigration<\/em>, as well as co-editing books and publishing journal articles.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently doing archival research for his next book, <em>Russia\u2019s Great Game: the Struggle for Mastery in Central Asia<\/em>, a history of rivalry, intrigue and espionage among the great powers in Central Asia during the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. \u201cNow that Russia\u2019s archives are more accessible, we can finally get a much better picture of this Victorian cold war,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Schimmelpenninck is also one of the editors of a major international project called \u201cRussia\u2019s Great War and Revolution.\u201d The project involves around 200 scholars from all over the world who are re-examining the events in Russia between 1914 and 1921, including World War I, revolution and civil war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major reappraisal of one of the most dramatic events of the 20th century,\u201d said Schimmelpenninck. \u201cAs we mark the First World War\u2019s centenary in Canada, we are all paying a great deal of attention to the Western front, but the suicidal struggle between the great empires of Eastern Europe was no less consequential for the 20th century, if not more so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, Schimmelpenninck has been invited to teach a short course on Russian Orientalism at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg next May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese outstanding scholars, artists and scientists will be joining the Society due to their outstanding work in the arts, humanities and sciences,\u201d said Graham Bell, President of the Royal Society of Canada. \u201cBy promoting and recognizing these leading intellectuals and researchers, the Royal Society of Canada continues to be on the forefront of significant advances for the betterment of Canada and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University History professor David Schimmelpenninck van der Oye has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), the country\u2019s top academic body.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":29210,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1,5],"tags":[3339,384,75,1295],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35082"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=35082"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35082\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":55275,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35082\/revisions\/55275"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/29210"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=35082"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=35082"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=35082"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
