{"id":34760,"date":"2015-08-27T15:06:43","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T20:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=34760"},"modified":"2015-08-27T15:17:13","modified_gmt":"2015-08-27T20:17:13","slug":"incoming-chancellor-makes-first-visit-to-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/08\/incoming-chancellor-makes-first-visit-to-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Incoming Chancellor makes first visit to Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_34761\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cheechoolightstone.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34761\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-34761\" title=\"cheechoolightstone\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cheechoolightstone-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Incoming Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo and Brock University President Jack Lightstone.\" width=\"504\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34761\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Incoming Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo and Brock University President Jack Lightstone.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brock University&#8217;s incumbent Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo made her first visit to campus Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>She was struck by the sense of community she felt on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Brock&#8217;s first Aboriginal woman to be named to the role will hold the position for three years starting at Fall convocation on Oct. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Cheechoo &#8211; an award-winning actress, playwright and filmmaker &#8211; is honoured and overwhelmed by her new role, a position she said will offer her the opportunity to make a difference at Brock and in the lives of students of all backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very important that Aboriginal women have these kinds of positions in the community,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I want to be able to make my mark here at Brock University.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A big part of that will be making Brock a welcoming environment for Aboriginal youth, a place where they can learn and grow and feel valued.<\/p>\n<p>As a residential school survivor, Cheechoo is passionate about educating people on the history, culture and languages of First Nations people.<\/p>\n<p>Cheechoo, who was in residential schools from age five to 14, still has difficulty talking about the trauma.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34762\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cheechoo.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34762\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-34762\" title=\"cheechoo\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cheechoo-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Shirley Cheechoo\" width=\"504\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shirley Cheechoo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To her, the most meaningful recommendation in the recently released Truth and Reconciliation Commission report focuses on teaching Canadians the history of the nation&#8217;s first peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Being named Brock&#8217;s next Chancellor is something she never dreamed could happen.<\/p>\n<p>It has given her a sense of belonging and a way to reach people with her unique voice, she said.<\/p>\n<p>As Brock&#8217;s eighth Chancellor, Cheechoo will take part in convocations and also intends to make frequent trips to the University as part of her ceremonial leadership role.<\/p>\n<p>University President Jack Lightstone said Cheechoo is a perfect fit for the role because of her background in the arts. With Brock poised to open the new state-of-the-art Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, he said her appointment comes at the perfect time.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing a Chancellor is an opportunity to reflect on developing areas of the University, he said, pointing to outgoing Chancellor Ned Goodman, a Canadian business icon who helped build the status and reputation of the Goodman School of Business.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shirley Cheechoo is an accomplished person in Canada&#8217;s cultural industries as a maker of films, playwright, actor, author and painter,&#8221; he said. \u00a0&#8220;The fact that she is also a woman is wonderful and we&#8217;ve never had a woman Chancellor, it&#8217;s long overdue. The fact that she is an Aboriginal woman is a real bonus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lightstone said Cheechoo will preside over convocations and offer graduates insights into life after University and what responsibilities come with it.<\/p>\n<p>Previous Brock Chancellors were:<\/p>\n<p>Richard Hearn 1966-69 (former chairman of Ontario Hydro)<br \/>\nCharles Sankey 1969-74 (former VP of Ontario Paper Company)<br \/>\nCecil Shaver 1974-80 (internationally known expert on respiratory diseases)<br \/>\nRalph Misener 1980-85 (president, Misener Steamships Co.)<br \/>\nRobert Welch 1985-2000 (St Catharines lawyer and former deputy premier of Ontario)<br \/>\nRaymond Moriyama 2001-2007 (renowned architect)<br \/>\nNed Goodman 2007-2015 (geologist, mining executive, investment advisor and philanthropist for whom Brock&#8217;s Goodman School of Business is named)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University&#8217;s incumbent Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo made her first visit to campus Thursday.
