{"id":3423,"date":"2010-06-02T09:46:20","date_gmt":"2010-06-02T14:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=3423"},"modified":"2010-06-02T09:46:20","modified_gmt":"2010-06-02T14:46:20","slug":"presidents-golf-tournament-raises-funds-for-athletic-student-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2010\/06\/presidents-golf-tournament-raises-funds-for-athletic-student-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"President&#8217;s golf tournament raises funds for athletic student awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Golfers joined Brock President Jack Lightstone at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls on May 27 for the eighth annual President&#8217;s Tournament in support of Brock Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s tournament, led once again by David Howes, chair of the President&#8217;s Tournament and immediate past chair of the Brock Board of Trustees, raised $75,000 for the university\u2019s athletic student awards program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a special event that allows our local partners to help our student athletes succeed at a greater level,\u201d Howes said.<\/p>\n<p>Brock&#8217;s athletes have won 28 national and 52 provincial championships since 1967.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proceeds from the tournament provide bursaries and scholarships for our student athletes, many of whom must use their own money to help cover their teams\u2019 costs of training camps, equipment and other expenses,\u201d Lightstone said. \u201cAthletes who benefit from these awards maintain a high academic standing, all the while juggling athletics, studies and part-time jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sodexo was the tournament\u2019s presenting sponsor.
