People with Type 1 diabetes are needed to pedal for a unique study by a Brock graduate student.<\/p>\n
Matthew Smith, a Master\u2019s student in Applied Health Sciences, is studying the effects of different ambient temperatures on blood glucose levels during exercise.<\/p>\n
Smith needs Type 1 diabetics between the ages of 18 to 50 to do moderate bike riding for 30 minutes in the lab. Participants will be asked to ride in cold, neutral or hot temperatures.<\/p>\n
Smith is working with Stephen Cheung, associate professor of Physical Education and Kinesiology and Canada Research Chair in environmental ergonomics. Cheung\u2019s lab is dedicated to studying the effects of extreme temperatures.<\/p>\n
Smith\u2019s study is intriguing, Cheung told the St. Catharines Standard<\/em> in a May 18 article, because it will improve the understanding of how people with Type 1 diabetes should use insulin based on exercise.<\/p>\n Volunteers will receive a free blood glucose monitor.<\/p>\n Potential participants can contact Matthew Smith at matthew.smith@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n
