{"id":30641,"date":"2014-11-06T14:25:08","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T19:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=30641"},"modified":"2014-11-06T14:25:08","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T19:25:08","slug":"rodman-hall-wins-at-oaag-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/11\/rodman-hall-wins-at-oaag-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodman Hall wins at OAAG awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_30640\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rodmanaward.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30640\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30640 \" title=\"rodmanaward\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rodmanaward-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"rodmanaward\" width=\"504\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jimmy Limit: Recent Advancements, curated by Marcie Bronson, was recognized as Exhibition of the Year, Monographic. <\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Brock University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/rodman-hall\" target=\"_blank\">Rodman Hall Art Centre<\/a> was recognized with two prestigious prizes this week at the 37th annual<a href=\"http:\/\/oaag.org\" target=\"_blank\"> Ontario Association of Art Galleries<\/a> (OAAG) Awards, presented at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto Nov. 5.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-eight public art galleries in 19 cities across Ontario were nominated for awards.<\/p>\n<p>Communities represented in the visual art nominations this year included Barrie, Cambridge, Chatham-Kent, Hamilton, Kingston, Kitchener, Kleinburg, London, Mississauga, Oakville, Oshawa, Ottawa, Owen Sound, St. Catharines, Sarnia, Toronto, Waterloo, Whitby, and Windsor.<\/p>\n<p>The OAAG Awards are annual, province-wide, juried art gallery awards of artistic merit and excellence.<\/p>\n<p>They recognize the new exhibitions, publications, programs and community partnerships that have been commissioned by and produced by Ontario&#8217;s public art galleries over the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jimmy Limit: Recent Advancements<\/em>, curated by Marcie Bronson, was recognized as Exhibition of the Year, Monographic.<\/p>\n<p>In her acceptance speech, Bronson noted that this exhibition was St. Catharines-based Limit&#8217;s first public art gallery showing.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/milutin-book-cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-30642\" title=\"milutin-book-cover\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/milutin-book-cover-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"milutin-book-cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The award citation noted the curator and artist as well as the Rodman Hall installation team, including Danny Custodio, Matthew Tegel and Jesse Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by commercial photography practices and the design of industrial supply catalogues and weekly flyers, Jimmy Limit builds and photographs simple constructions of hardware store goods and fruits.<\/p>\n<p>Selecting his varied subjects for their aesthetic interest rather than function, he engages them from a strictly formal standpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Through photographs and installations, Limit engages layers of reflection on past and present photography traditions to explore the relationship between an object and its image in a consideration of how desire is created and sold.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition catalogue Milutin Gubash &#8211; co-published by Rodman Hall Art Centre, Carleton University Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Southern Alberta Art Gallery and Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;art de Joliette &#8211; received an Honourable Mention in the category of Art Publication of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Serbian-born artist Milutin Gubash has developed a diverse practice focused on the investigation of his own personal, social and cultural identity.<\/p>\n<p>This first monograph examines the overlap of history, humour and authenticity found in his multifaceted practice.<\/p>\n<p>Often cast as the lead alongside his family and friends, Gubash employs narrative to blur the boundaries between real, lived lives and the people who we wish we were.<\/p>\n<p>Produced to accompany a multi-venue 10-year survey of Gubash&#8217;s work, the publication includes original essays and complete photographic documentation.
