{"id":28105,"date":"2014-05-20T14:05:22","date_gmt":"2014-05-20T19:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=28105"},"modified":"2014-05-21T12:59:48","modified_gmt":"2014-05-21T17:59:48","slug":"organizing-and-mobilizing-social-justice-at-congress-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/05\/organizing-and-mobilizing-social-justice-at-congress-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Organizing and mobilizing social justice at Congress 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_28107\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/tbn_sjri_hands.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28107\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28107\" title=\"Human races joined together.\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/tbn_sjri_hands-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"     \" width=\"504\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">     <\/p><\/div>\n<p>At Congress 2014, Brock&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-justice-research-institute\/\">Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI)<\/a> will be creating a transdisciplinary space to foster dialogue and galvanize colleagues from the social sciences and humanities around themes of social justice.<\/p>\n<p>A key priority for the newly created institute is to break down boundaries and connect the threads of social justice scholarship taking place across various disciplines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28109\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/congress-logo2-brocknews1.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28109\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28109\" title=\"congress-logo2-brocknews1\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/congress-logo2-brocknews1-300x168.png\" alt=\"congress-logo2-brocknews1\" width=\"240\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">    <\/p><\/div>\n<p>To do this <a href=\"http:\/\/congress2014.ca\/\">at Congress 2014<\/a>, SJRI is helping to promote the social justice events of 21 academic and community organizations, including co-sponsoring 11 high-profile events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Connections among academics, activists and community partners will produce knowledge that addresses urgent social problems and opens new pathways to social change locally, nationally, and globally,&#8221; says Janet Conway, Canada Research Chair in Social Justice, and SJRI affiliate.<\/p>\n<p>The institute represents a new organizational model for thematic and transdisciplinary research in social justice in an academic setting. It aims to connect the dots between disciplines without having one true &#8220;home&#8221; association.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wouldn&#8217;t want a home association because that&#8217;s the point,&#8221; says Andrea Doucet, Canada Research Chair in Gender, Work and Care and SJRI affiliate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we talk about social justice issues we&#8217;re focused on problematics,&#8221; says Doucet. &#8220;And problematics require multiple approaches because, often, it&#8217;s not just one disciplinary approach that&#8217;s going to make sense of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Key events at <a href=\"http:\/\/congress2014.ca\/\">Congress 2014<\/a> that Brock&#8217;s Social Justice Research Institute have had a hand in helping to organize or promote, include:<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/congress2014.ca\/program\/events\/performance-next-company-theatres-khalida\"><strong>Performance of neXT Company Theatre&#8217;s <em>Khalida<\/em><\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nSaturday, May 24, 8 p.m., Sean O&#8217;Sullivan Theatre, Brock University<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/webfm_send\/25804\"><em>Khalida<\/em><\/a> features the confessions and testimony of Said, a man in flight from a conflict zone in the Middle East who has found himself in an oil producing country in the economic North. Written and directed by David Fancy.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/congress2014.ca\/program\/events\/globalization-and-social-movements-global-justice\"><strong>Globalization and social movements for global justice<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThursday, May 29, 11:15 a.m., Lowenberger Dining Hall, Brock University<\/p>\n<p>This inter-disciplinary session addresses the growing interconnectivity across national borders and the North-South divide in global politics, while elaborating on linguistic, ethno-cultural, and class difference and inequality in global social justice movements operating in different places and at various scales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>* <a href=\" http:\/\/congress2014.ca\/program\/events\/documentary-film-making-meets-social-justice-feminist-journey\">Documentary film-making meets social justice: A feminist journey<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong>Thursday, May 29, 2014, 3:30 p.m., Thistle 325, Brock University<\/p>\n<p>In this public keynote lecture, Kum-Kum Bhavnani from the University of California discusses the making of her two award-winning films (The Shape of Water and Nothing like Chocolate), how they work to dissolve boundaries between scholarly and public understandings, as well as how they attempt to &#8220;speed up processes of social justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brock&#8217;s Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=22855\">was established Fall 2013<\/a> as a leader in advanced <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/trans-disciplinary-research\">transdisciplinary<\/a> social justice scholarship, innovative knowledge mobilization strategies, and community-university partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>SJRI is a vibrant collective of 47 faculty members from 15 departments and centres at Brock University brought together by a shared concern for pressing social justice issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At Congress 2014, Brock&#8217;s Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) will be creating a transdisciplinary space to foster dialogue and galvanize colleagues from the social sciences and humanities around themes of social justice.
