{"id":27919,"date":"2014-05-07T15:14:29","date_gmt":"2014-05-07T20:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=27919"},"modified":"2014-05-07T15:14:29","modified_gmt":"2014-05-07T20:14:29","slug":"brock-grad-named-canadian-chef-de-mission-for-2015-parapan-american-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/05\/brock-grad-named-canadian-chef-de-mission-for-2015-parapan-american-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock grad named Canadian chef de mission for 2015 Parapan American Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_27920\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27920\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-27920\" title=\"CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE (CPC) - Elisabeth Walker-Young\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/parapan2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE (CPC) - Elisabeth Walker-Young\" width=\"504\" height=\"283\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University alumna Elisabeth Walker-Young (BPhEd &#39;02) has been named Team Canada&#39;s chef de mission for the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Brock University alumna Elisabeth Walker-Young (BPhEd &#8217;02) has been named <a href=\"http:\/\/paralympic.ca\/news-and-events\/news\/four-time-paralympian-elisabeth-walker-young-named-canadas-chef-de-mission-for\" target=\"_blank\">Team Canada&#8217;s chef de mission<\/a> for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto2015.org\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe four-time Paralympian was pegged as a natural to serve as Team Canada&#8217;s spokesperson when it competes on home soil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Elisabeth&#8217;s contribution to the London Paralympic Games as assistant chef de mission was spectacular, and I couldn&#8217;t be happier to have her leading the largest Parapan Am Canadian team ever in her native Ontario,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paralympic.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Paralympic Committee<\/a> president Ga\u00e9tan Tardif said in a release. &#8220;There is great value in Canada hosting international events, and I know Elisabeth will help Team Canada&#8217;s athletes and coaches make the most of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of competing at a home Games. Just being around Elisabeth is motivating, and she has a natural rapport-building ability that I know the team will appreciate and benefit greatly from.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Walker-Young swam for Brock before making a splash internationally. The Toronto native won six medals (three gold, one silver, two bronze) at four Paralympic Games, breaking several Canadian and world records during her career. Walker-Young is an educational programs manager for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.curlbc.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Curl B.C<\/a>. She lives in North Vancouver with her husband Ian (BSM &#8217;02), who was also a varsity swimmer with the Badgers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the culmination of years of focus and hard work as an athlete, of contributions as a volunteer and experiences working in the sport sector,&#8221; Walker-Young said. &#8220;It is these experiences, memories and skills from my participation in sport and the values I learned along the way that I hope to share with the athletes and coaches of Team Canada, to help them reach their goals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games run Aug. 7-15, 2015 and will feature 1,608 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports.
