{"id":27740,"date":"2014-04-25T12:47:22","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T17:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=27740"},"modified":"2014-04-25T12:51:13","modified_gmt":"2014-04-25T17:51:13","slug":"brock-well-represented-at-in-the-soil-downtown-arts-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/04\/brock-well-represented-at-in-the-soil-downtown-arts-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock well represented at In The Soil downtown arts festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_27742\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/its-tbn-banner.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27742\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27742    \" title=\"its-tbn-banner\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/its-tbn-banner.jpg\" alt=\"Scenes from last year's In The Soil arts festival in downtown St. Catharines (photo by Lauren Garbutt Photography)\" width=\"466\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-27742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scenes from last year&#39;s In The Soil arts festival (photo by Lauren Garbutt Photography)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brock students, staff, alumni and volunteers will help bring downtown St. Catharines to life this weekend as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inthesoil.on.ca\/\">In The Soil festival<\/a> once again takes over the core for a weekend of creative arts, entertainment and more.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day multidisciplinary arts fest, now in its sixth year, kicks off tonight at 5 p.m. with a performance by the Woodshed Orchestra at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/43%C2%B009%2730.7%22N+79%C2%B014%2735.7%22W\/@43.158539,-79.243247,18z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0?hl=en-US\">Festival Hub on St. Paul St.<\/a> between James and Carlisle Streets, which will be closed off to vehicle traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The annual showcase for Niagara&#8217;s budding creative arts scene expects to draw more than 400 artists and 5,000 attendees to the city for the three-day weekend festival.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the 2014 festival&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wJHJGoGyC2E\">promo video here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With more than 140 acts, artisans and installations to check out, this is truly a festival that celebrates and highlights the arts in Niagara and beyond,&#8221; says Sara Palmieri, Committee Chair for In The Soil.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s festival will also include a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inthesoil.on.ca\/2014\/news\/even-got-ferris-wheel\/\">50-foot-high ferris wheel<\/a> right on St. Paul St. &#8211; a first for the City of St. Catharines.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss your chance to look high over downtown at the making of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buildingtheartsdowntown.ca\">Academic and Cultural Arts Centre<\/a> and future home of Brock&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/humanities\/departments-and-centres\/fine-and-performing-arts\">Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other festival highlights include musical performances by Canadian hip-hop artist Buck 65; Billy Martin, drummer with the New York City-based jazz-funk trio Medeski Martin &amp; Wood; and St. Catharines-based group Creature Speak.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be live theatre and comedy such as <em>Paper Song<\/em> by Concrete Theatre group; <em>The Dirty Cabaret III<\/em> by St. Catharines theatre company Suitcase in Point; and <em>The Al Borland Band or Tool Time Take Two <\/em>by local artist Danny Fast.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention art and photography installations around downtown like Adam CK Vollick&#8217;s<em> Frame of Reference<\/em> and a Vendor Bender marketplace, both at the Festival Hub.
