{"id":27013,"date":"2014-03-14T15:20:51","date_gmt":"2014-03-14T20:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=27013"},"modified":"2014-03-14T15:27:39","modified_gmt":"2014-03-14T20:27:39","slug":"brock-summer-pick-program-celebrates-indigenous-authors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/03\/brock-summer-pick-program-celebrates-indigenous-authors\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Pick program celebrates Indigenous authors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_27012\" style=\"width: 393px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27012\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27012\" title=\"579824_10150839922987685_644622776_n\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/579824_10150839922987685_644622776_n.jpg\" alt=\"579824_10150839922987685_644622776_n\" width=\"383\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Wagamese, author of Indian Horse, will sign his book March 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Pond Outlet, with a talk at 7 p.m.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With Brock celebrating its <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku50.ca\" target=\"_blank\">50th anniversary <\/a>in 2014, the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/aboriginal-education-council\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal Education Council <\/a>created the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/aboriginal-education-council\/brock-s-summer-2014-pick\" target=\"_blank\">Brock Summer 2014 Pick<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired from CBC&#8217;s annual \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/canadareads\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Reads<\/a>&#8216; contest, Brock&#8217;s initiative involves reading any or all of the books: Trace DeMeyer and Patricia Cotter-Busbee&#8217;s Two Worlds; Joseph Boydon&#8217;s Three Day Road, and Richard Wagamese&#8217;s Indian Horse, and rating them online.<\/p>\n<p>The program was organized to commemorate Brock&#8217;s anniversary and the 400th anniversary of the pivotal<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two_Row_Wampum_Treaty\" target=\"_blank\"> Two Row Wampum Treat<\/a>y that was established between First Nations people and colonial settlers in the northeast.<\/p>\n<p>When the poll closes, the book with the highest ratings will be declared Brock&#8217;s Pick for 2014 Summer Reading.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement will be made end of April in conjunction with a performance by Debajehmujig (an Aboriginal theatre troupe) hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Brock&#8217;s Centre for the Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Four events are planned between March 18-March 31 and are free and open to the public:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, March 18<\/strong><br \/>\nCoffee house from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. sponsored by CHYS students with free refreshments and rotating presentations approximately every 20 minutes, held in Cairns 336 (which is in the Child and Youth Department suite of offices).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, March 24<\/strong><br \/>\nA different Coffee house from 2 p.m.-5 p.m., same format, held in Pond Inlet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, March 25<\/strong><br \/>\nTracey DeMeyer and Patricia Cotter-Busbee, the co-editors of Two Worlds, together with a couple of the contributors, start their book signing at 6 p.m. A panel presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Cairns 336.
