{"id":26741,"date":"2014-03-04T11:06:34","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T16:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=26741"},"modified":"2014-03-04T11:06:34","modified_gmt":"2014-03-04T16:06:34","slug":"brock-sustainability-group-hosting-two-community-science-cafes-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/03\/brock-sustainability-group-hosting-two-community-science-cafes-this-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock sustainability group hosting two community science caf\u00e9s this month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/environmental-sustainability-research-centre\">Environmental Sustainability Research Centre<\/a> will host two community Science Caf\u00e9s this month on biodiversity and sustainability issues in Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these interactive events are free and open to the public, and will take place at Mahtay Caf\u00e9, 241 St. Paul St. in downtown St. Catharines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Sustainability in our Region: Why is Biodiversity Important?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Wednesday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m., Mahtay Caf\u00e9, St. Catharines <\/em><br \/>\nThis caf\u00e9 is a coached discussion between local radio host Larry Fedoruk, AM 610 CKTB, and Brock graduate student Shawn Geniole; Deanna Linbalnd, natural heritage systems co-ordinator for the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority; and Pete Birrell, environmental officer with General Motors. They will be discussing the importance of biodiversity in Niagara and the opportunities and challenges that exist to protect or restore it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Energizing Discussion and Change for a Sustainable Future&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Saturday, March 29 at 10:30 a.m., Mahtay Caf\u00e9, St. Catharines <\/em><br \/>\nThis caf\u00e9 will consist of two presentations and an open discussion about renewable and sustainable sources of energy. Guests include Tom Rankin and Jordan Beekhuis from Rankin Construction (&#8220;Renewing Vision: The State of Wind, Hydro, and Solar Energy Generation in Ontario&#8221;) and Christina Hoicka, assistant professor of environmental studies, York University (&#8220;Communities and Energy Management&#8221;).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University&#8217;s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre will host two community Science Caf\u00e9s this month on biodiversity and sustainability issues in Niagara.
