{"id":25255,"date":"2013-11-06T15:48:01","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T20:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=25255"},"modified":"2013-11-06T15:49:45","modified_gmt":"2013-11-06T20:49:45","slug":"25255","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/11\/25255\/","title":{"rendered":"Students discover career options during Take Our Kids to Work Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_25257\" style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/take-our-kids.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25257\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-25257 \" title=\"take-our-kids\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/take-our-kids-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Erin Kenny (right) and Alison Rowntree watch as Alison's father, Joe Kenny, works with a patient at Brock's athletic therapy clinic Wednesday during Take Our Kids to Work Day. \" width=\"403\" height=\"605\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Kenny (right) and Alison Rowntree watch as Alison&#39;s father, Joe Kenny, works with a patient at Brock&#39;s athletic therapy clinic Wednesday during Take Our Kids to Work Day. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>When Erin Kenny and Alison Rowntree arrived at Brock Wednesday morning for <a title=\"Take our Kids to Work Day\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelearningpartnership.ca\/TOKW\" target=\"_blank\">Take Our Kids to Work Day,<\/a> giving a dummy a needle and getting fake blood on themselves seemed unlikely to be on the day&#8217;s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>But it happened during a tour of Brock in which the two friends and Grade 9 students got a glimpse into the different academic departments at the University \u2014 in this case, nursing.<\/p>\n<p>Though neither knows what they want to do when they&#8217;re done school, the experience got them wondering about career options in medicine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It makes you think about stuff you could do in the future,&#8221; Rowntree said.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the point of the annual sojourn to the workplace that Grade 9 students throughout Canada take for a day, trading the classroom for their parents&#8217; office.<\/p>\n<p>At Brock&#8217;s edition of Take Our Kids to Work Day, 31 high school students opted to shadow parents or family friends to get a sense of what they do all day and discover future career options.<\/p>\n<p>The students participated in orientation, tours, presentations and safety training in the morning before getting to spend the afternoon as their parents&#8217; prot\u00e9g\u00e9s.<br \/>\nRowntree and Kenny were here with Kenny&#8217;s mom Karen McAllister-Kenny, director of Recreation Services, and dad Joe Kenny, adjunct professor in the <a title=\"Department of Kinesiology\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/applied-health-sciences\/academic-departments\/kinesiology\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Kinesiology.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though neither got to spend much time shadowing their mentors before heading to volleyball practice, McAllister-Kenny said she was happy with the exposure the duo got to the Brock campus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the gym they see most of the time,&#8221; McAllister-Kenny said. &#8220;They come to camps and other activities but this opens them up to other things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Matthew Grinbergs, who has aspirations to become an architect, the day showed him that Brock would be a great place to do his first degree before pursuing his dream profession.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today just finalized it for me,&#8221; Grinbergs said.<\/p>\n<p>It also gave him new appreciation for what his mother Joanna Romano does each day as marketing production co-ordinator in the University&#8217;s marketing department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t really know much about her job beforehand,&#8221; he admitted. &#8220;When I found out, I felt proud.
