{"id":247,"date":"2009-12-07T11:50:42","date_gmt":"2009-12-07T16:50:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=247"},"modified":"2017-07-06T13:19:08","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T17:19:08","slug":"research-cafe-featured-a-diverse-menu-of-%e2%80%98meaningful-study%e2%80%99-for-today%e2%80%99s-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2009\/12\/research-cafe-featured-a-diverse-menu-of-%e2%80%98meaningful-study%e2%80%99-for-today%e2%80%99s-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Research caf\u00e9 featured a diverse menu  of \u2018meaningful study\u2019 for today\u2019s society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was called a research caf\u00e9 for a good reason.<\/p>\n<p>The Nov. 25 \u201cResearch for a Changing World\u201d offered a diverse menu of research topics that address the challenges of today\u2019s world and the impact on daily life \u2013 from how we play and learn to how we sleep and function.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-248\" style=\"border: 15px solid white;\" title=\"mappinglogosm\" src=\"\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mappinglogosm.jpg\" alt=\"mappinglogosm\" width=\"200\" height=\"177\" \/>More than 70 people gathered at Pond Inlet for this first event of the 2009-10 Mapping the New Knowledges conference. The caf\u00e9 featured research presentations from faculty and graduate students from Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and a Niagara community representative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch is the lifeblood of a full-blooded university such as ours, and our faculty and graduate students work together to undertake the meaningful study of all aspects of our society,\u201d said Marilyn Rose, dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies. \u201cAt Brock, researchers at every level generate knowledge that truly addresses our \u2018changing world.\u2019 In this sense, they and their counterparts in the Niagara community are truly the architects of tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference is presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\">Faculty of Graduate Studies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/research\">Brock Research<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/gsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate Students\u2019 Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kevin Kee, associate professor, History, and Tamer Thabet, a visiting international scholar and PhD student at the University of Antwerp, presented \u201cInteractive Media at Brock, for Niagara.\u201d Kee discussed his research into best practices for the design, development and use of computer games and simulations for history learning and public history. We are in this moment in time, he said, in which new technology is affording us possibilities \u2013 it\u2019s up to us to see how to use these. Thabet\u2019s work focuses on the need for literary theorists to examine the ways in which our stories are being told through new kinds of interactive narrative activities, such as computer games.<\/li>\n<li>Susan Drake, professor, Graduate and Undergraduate Education, and doctoral students Danielle Beckett, Catherine Longboat and Joanne Reid presented \u201cExploring the impact of integrated curriculum on classroom practice in one Ontario school board.\u201d Their collaboration focuses on the Bluewater District School Board and its experience with an interdisciplinary approach to classroom teaching organized around big ideas rather than individual subject curriculum. Drake and the graduate students discussed the project and shared their insights as research partners.<\/li>\n<li>Kimberly Cote, associate professor, Psychology and Neuroscience, and doctoral student Catherine Milner presented \u201cFunctioning in a 24-7 world: how sleep impacts waking cognition and performance.\u201d The general focus of Cote\u2019s program of research is the study of sleep, performance, and cognition. Milner discussed her master\u2019s work in understanding the role of napping in both young and older adults and her PhD sleep research involving people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury.<\/li>\n<li>Sandra Noel, a data analysis co-ordinator with Ontario Early Years, Niagara Region, through Regional Municipality of Niagara Public Health, presented \u201cA Report to Mobilize a Community into Action.\u201d Noel talked about a recently released report, \u201cNiagara Children\u2019s Charter Enacted,\u201d on how well Niagara is supporting children and their families.
