{"id":24348,"date":"2013-09-12T14:56:08","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T19:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=24348"},"modified":"2013-09-17T08:40:01","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T13:40:01","slug":"sociology-speaker-series-lecture-sept-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/09\/sociology-speaker-series-lecture-sept-18\/","title":{"rendered":"Sociology speaker series lecture Sept. 18"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/undergraduate-programs\/sociology\">Department of Sociology at Brock<\/a> will present the next talk in its ongoing speaker series on Wednesday, Sept. 18.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa Farr, a specialist in conflict and gender who holds a PhD from the School of Women&#8217;s Studies at York University, will present a talk, entitled &#8220;Re-awakening a Feminist-Inspired Peace Movement: A Call to Action&#8221; from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Plaza 600F.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free and all are welcome to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on her extensive experience working in the occupied Palestinian territory, Libya, Syria, Yemen and seven other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Farr&#8217;s talk will consider the history and prospects of feminist-inspired peace and human rights activism.<\/p>\n<p>Farr was the first global Gender and Conflict Advisor at United Nations Development Programme&#8217;s (UNDP) Bureau for Crisis Prevention and served as Social Development and Gender Advisor at UNDP&#8217;s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People.<\/p>\n<p>She has published widely on issues related to gender and armed conflict, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lit-verlag.de\/isbn\/3-643-80117-3\"><em>Back to the Roots: Security Sector Reform and Development<\/em><\/a> (M\u00fcnster: LIT, 2012) and <a href=\"http:\/\/unu.edu\/publications\/books\/sexed-pistols-the-gendered-impacts-of-small-arms-and-light-weapons.html#overview\"><em>Sexed Pistols: The Gendered Impacts of Small Arms and Light Weapons<\/em><\/a> (UNU Press, 2009).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Sociology at Brock will present the next talk in its ongoing speaker series on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
