{"id":24297,"date":"2013-09-10T09:12:33","date_gmt":"2013-09-10T14:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=24297"},"modified":"2013-09-10T10:15:39","modified_gmt":"2013-09-10T15:15:39","slug":"new-experts-guide-for-media-helps-researchers-raise-their-profiles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/09\/new-experts-guide-for-media-helps-researchers-raise-their-profiles\/","title":{"rendered":"New faculty experts guide for media helps researchers raise their profiles"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_24300\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tbn-brief.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24300\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-24300\" title=\"interview\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tbn-brief-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"     \" width=\"504\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">     <\/p><\/div>\n<p>When one thinks of research activities, being cited in newspapers and magazines or on websites, radio and television does not immediately come to mind.<\/p>\n<p>But interactions with news media &#8211; being quoted in news or feature reports, writing commentaries or having research projects profiled in the press &#8211; have increasingly become part of researchers&#8217; roles and responsibilities, say researchers and university officials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The general public is very often interested in knowing about what we do,&#8221; says Community Health Sciences professor Anthony Bogaert, who has been featured in a wide array of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health\/healthnews\/10287958\/Having-more-older-brothers-increases-likelihood-of-being-gay.html\">national and international media<\/a> primarily for his pioneering work on asexuality.<\/p>\n<p>This is in large part because society &#8211; like the students in the classroom &#8211; has a thirst for knowledge, while a key activity of a researcher&#8217;s job is to disseminate knowledge, says Vice-President Research Gary Libben.<\/p>\n<p>Media appearances are &#8220;in no way different from that core mandate to share knowledge,&#8221; says Libben. &#8220;It&#8217;s in a different venue perhaps with different people, but that&#8217;s all the better.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A democratic society is an informed society. It&#8217;s a society that has chosen to think.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To encourage researchers&#8217; involvement with the media, and make it easier for media to connect with researchers, Brock&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/marketing-communications\/media-resources\">Office of Communications &amp; Public Affairs<\/a> is working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/research-at-brock\">Office of Research Services<\/a> and Faculties to create a fresh new <em><strong>BrockU Experts Guide for Media<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This web-based resource will be posted on various University websites and shared with local, national and international news media organizations.<\/p>\n<p>To become part of this media initiative, faculty members can fill in the yellow-coloured submission forms that were mailed out in August.
