Undergraduate students submitted the nominations, describing why their nominee stands out from other teachers at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>Seven awards were given \u2014 one per faculty, plus an award for a teaching assistant or lab demonstrator. Murphy won the overall award for teaching excellence as well as the award for the Faculty of Social Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I didn\u2019t understand something the first time, he took another approach to better suit my learning needs,\u201d a student wrote in the nomination package. \u201cMost important to me was how he continually reminded me that I could learn the material well enough for the exams and that I should believe in myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murphy has also been experimenting with new learning evaluation tools called Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique, which analyzes whether a scratch-ticket-style multiple-choice question, which provides immediate feedback, improves long-term retention.<\/p>\n<p>Other winners were:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty of Applied Health Sciences \u2014 Mary Breunig, Recreation and Leisure<\/strong> <strong>Studies<\/strong><br \/>\nBreunig, an assistant professor, \u201cis a professor that motivates, inspires and encourages students to succeed,\u201d with a \u201cunique style of teaching where she helps us learn through experience,\u201d her nomination package said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty of Business \u2014 Isabelle Giroux, Organizational Behaviour, Human Resources, Entrepreneurship and Ethics<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cWhere most professors in academia cater to auditory learners with their magisterial lectures, Isabelle interacts with her audience,\u201d said the nomination package for the assistant professor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty of Education \u2013 Ann-Marie DiBiase, Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Education<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cWhen giving her lectures, she provided materials every class, and ensured that each student had accurate notes,\u201d said DiBiase\u2019s nomination package. The associate professor also offered \u201ca high level of support so that everyone was on the right track, while being available for every student at any time of the day or night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty of Humanities \u2014 Astrid Heyer, Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures<br \/>\n<\/strong>Heyer \u201cmakes her classroom a safe place for students to experience mistakes by turning \u2018corrections\u2019 into \u2018teaching moments,\u2019\u201d said the associate professor\u2019s nominator. She also \u201cwelcomes students from other sections of the course into her classroom as if they belong there. She knows every student by name and makes her lessons relevant to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty of Mathematics and Science \u2014 Dorothy (Dot) Miners, Mathematics<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cShe was always enthusiastic about the subject she was teaching, which only made me enjoy the subject that much more,\u201d a student said in the nomination package for the full-time instructor. \u201cI truly believed that she wanted to see all of her students succeed, and with over a hundred students, I am sure she was kept busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Award for Teaching Assistants\/Lab Demonstrators &#8211; Charmaine McKnight, History<br \/>\n<\/strong>As a teaching assistant, McKnight \u201c is very approachable both within class, and outside.
