{"id":21656,"date":"2013-04-02T09:46:21","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T14:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=21656"},"modified":"2013-04-02T09:47:22","modified_gmt":"2013-04-02T14:47:22","slug":"prominent-poets-kick-off-distinguished-speaker-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/04\/prominent-poets-kick-off-distinguished-speaker-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Prominent poets kick off distinguished speaker series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two of Canada&#8217;s most eminent African-Canadian poets will headline this year&#8217;s Faculty of Education Distinguished Speaker Series.<\/p>\n<p>George Elliott Clarke and Pamela Mordecai present Audible Motion: New School Black Verse on Thursday, April 11.<\/p>\n<p>Their presentation, covering class time, playtime, and contemplation, will engage the illicit and subversive aspects of each of their new verse collections.<\/p>\n<p>It happens from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sankey Chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke is the E.J. Pratt Professor of Canadian Literature at the University of Toronto and current poet laureate of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>He won the Governor General&#8217;s poetry award for his collection called Execution Poems. His latest collection, Illicit Sonnets, is set to be released this year.<\/p>\n<p>Mordecai is a former language arts teacher, who has written textbooks and articles on Caribbean literature and language education.
