She and her non-Native husband are featured in the film <em>Club Native<\/em>, which chronicles the thorny question of membership on a reserve near Montreal that aims to preserve its identity. <em>Club Native<\/em> was also screened at the event.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2023\" title=\"Waneek Horn-Miller\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/waneek2.jpg\" alt=\"waneek2\" width=\"230\" height=\"130\" \/>Letters were sent to about 25 non-Native Kahnawake residents in February telling them to leave the territory. Letter recipients included a teacher and man who operates a long-time Tae Kwan Do school, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are people with serious ties to the community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2025\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2025\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2025\" title=\"Waneek Horn-Miller\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/waneek3.jpg\" alt=\"Waneek Horn-Miller\" width=\"230\" height=\"130\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Waneek Horn-Miller speaks at a recent Aboriginal Women&#39;s Day event at Pond Inlet.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The issue of membership started with the federal government\u2019s Indian Act, which overthrew traditional Aboriginal concepts of membership and imposed colonial ones. Horn-Miller said she has proposed compromises to her band administration.<\/p>\n<p>Band council has since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/life\/Reserve+fears+influx\/2718534\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">decided to hold public hearings on the issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Horn-Miller is co-ordinator of the First People\u2019s House at McGill University.
