{"id":20009,"date":"2013-01-08T08:30:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T13:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=20009"},"modified":"2013-01-08T09:52:53","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T14:52:53","slug":"competition-seeks-ideas-to-make-ontario-more-accessible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/01\/competition-seeks-ideas-to-make-ontario-more-accessible\/","title":{"rendered":"Competition seeks ideas to make Ontario more accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Council of Ontario Universities wants undergraduate students to make the world more accessible for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>To encourage their ideas for inclusion, the council is hosting <a title=\"IDEA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cou.on.ca\/IDeA\" target=\"_blank\">Innovative Designs for Accessibility (IDeA) 2013<\/a> an annual Ontario-wide competition showcasing innovative designs for accessibility in partnership with the provincial government.<\/p>\n<p>IDeA is inspired by the goal of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) to make Ontario accessible to people with disabilities by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Students are encouraged to develop innovative, cost-effective and practical solutions for barriers to accessibility in our communities and vie for up to $1,500 in prizes with entries that address one or more of the five barrier categories: attitudinal, physical\/architectural, information and communications, technological, and systemic\/organizational.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16527\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/idea-oce.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16527\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16527\" title=\"idea-oce\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/idea-oce-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"Hilary Tyler with John Milloy, minister of community and social services, at the OCE Discovery conference in Toronto last May. \" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hilary Tyler with John Milloy, minister of community and social services, at the OCE Discovery conference in Toronto last May. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last year, <a title=\"The Brock News\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=16459\" target=\"_blank\">Brock nursing student Hilary Tyler won third place<\/a> and $500 at IDeA for her &#8220;Everybody Hurts&#8221; campaign intended to promote empathy and break down attitudinal barriers that exist for people living with mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brock University continues to move forward in accessibility  in order to identify, prevent and remove barriers to the inclusion of persons with disabilities &#8221; said Greg Finn, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic.&#8221;Faculty are strongly encouraged to bring this competition to the attention of students. We hope to see Brock continue to have a strong presence in this provincewide competition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Submissions must be received at Brock by April 14, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>All proposals will be evaluated by the entrant&#8217;s home institution. Successful candidates go on to a second round of judging by a panel of experts.
