{"id":19687,"date":"2012-11-22T12:06:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-22T17:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=19687"},"modified":"2012-11-22T12:07:37","modified_gmt":"2012-11-22T17:07:37","slug":"concurrent-ed-student-recognized-for-community-contributions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2012\/11\/concurrent-ed-student-recognized-for-community-contributions\/","title":{"rendered":"Concurrent ed student recognized for community contributions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_19689\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/krissa-1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19689\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19689\" title=\"krissa-1\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/krissa-1.jpg\" alt=\"krissa-1\" width=\"196\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Krissa Donahue<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When you take into account lectures, seminars and homework, a student&#8217;s life can be hectic enough, never mind the extracurricular activities in which they take part.<\/p>\n<p>But Krissa Donahue was able to find time through it all to make a significant difference in her community.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth year concurrent education student organized an event at Westmount Public School that kick-started the school&#8217;s Halloween for Hunger campaign, donating 471 cans of food to the drive for <a title=\"Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold\" href=\"http:\/\/www.communitycarestca.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But it didn&#8217;t end with just a donation. She invited the school&#8217;s Me to We club to listen to a speech on the importance of volunteering by Adam Venning, the volunteer and charities co-ordinator with <a title=\"BUSU\" href=\"http:\/\/www.busu.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brock University Students&#8217; Union.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students then kicked up their heels, learning new moves from Brock Dance instructors, did crafts and refueled on healthy snacks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since my event, the school has collected a record amount of cans for Community Care,&#8221; a proud Donahue said.<\/p>\n<p>Students have donated about 1,000 cans of food.<\/p>\n<p>Aspiring to be a primary school teacher, Donahue said she&#8217;s passionate about instilling in children the idea of being the best you can be at an early age.<\/p>\n<p>Donahue was recognized last week for her efforts by Samsung&#8217;s Mobile Canada team, who presented her with a $1,500-scholarship for placing fourth in Samsung&#8217;s National Leadership Program. Donahue also won a new Samsung Galaxy S3 for making it into the top-20 in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was stunned when I received the phone call from Samsung,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I never thought going about my daily life would have an impact on others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you take into account lectures, seminars and homework, a student&#8217;s life can be hectic enough, never mind the extracurricular activities in which they take part.
