{"id":19530,"date":"2012-11-14T14:11:03","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T19:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=19530"},"modified":"2012-11-14T14:11:47","modified_gmt":"2012-11-14T19:11:47","slug":"nursing-lecturer-wins-grant-to-study-cancer-screen-behaviours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2012\/11\/nursing-lecturer-wins-grant-to-study-cancer-screen-behaviours\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing lecturer wins grant to study cancer screening behaviours"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_19532\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/crawford.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19532\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19532\" title=\"Joanne Crawford\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/crawford-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"Joanne Crawford, a lecturer in Brock's Department of Nursing, recently won an award that will help with her research into cancer screen behaviours. \" width=\"504\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joanne Crawford, a lecturer in Brock&#39;s Department of Nursing, recently won an award that will help with her research into cancer screen behaviours. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>A lecturer in Brock&#8217;s <a title=\"Department of Nursing\" href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/applied-health-sciences\/academic-departments\/nursing\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Nursing<\/a> has been awarded a novice researcher grant to study the colorectal cancer screening behaviours of one of the largest and fastest growing groups in Ontario in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Joanne Crawford, an oncology nurse researcher, received the annual award this fall from the <a title=\"Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cano-acio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology<\/a> to help with her doctoral research involving South Asian immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is important to understand how we can promote cancer prevention through screening given that colorectal cancer not only can be detected early but is also a preventable disease,&#8221; said Crawford, who has spent the past nine years promoting cancer screening for immigrant populations.<\/p>\n<p>Language is among the top barriers for South Asian immigrants accessing screening.
