In the course of its first decade, the tournament has raised more than $800,000 to help Brock&#8217;s student athletes. Proceeds are raised through the golf fees and also through important support from sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since day one, the tournament has been about helping to support our talented young student athletes,&#8221; said Tournament Chair David Howes, who is also Immediate Past Chair of the University&#8217;s Board of Trustees &#8220;It is also an opportunity to get the public involved in Brock and to reach out to the people of Niagara to be a part of what the University does in our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brock University has a rich tradition of athletic excellence. In its 45-year history, the Badgers have captured 29 national and 57 provincial championships in a wide variety of sports. Brock currently has teams in 26 varsity sports &#8211; 14 men&#8217;s and 12 women&#8217;s programs.<\/p>\n<p>Lightstone thanked the participants for supporting dedicated athletes who excel not only in sport but also in academics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, they are active members in the Niagara community,&#8221; said Lightstone. &#8220;Athletes who benefit from these awards maintain a high academic standing, all the while juggling athletics, studies, part-time jobs and volunteering.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a student athlete, we are extremely grateful for the financial support we receive,&#8221; says Brock men&#8217;s hockey player Derek Brochu. &#8220;It allows us to put our energy and focus in both our athletics and academics.
