The web application for students not receiving OSAP went live on the province\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/ontario.ca\/30off\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c30 per cent Off\u201d website<\/a> at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The program grants eligible full-time undergraduate students a credit equivalent of 30 per cent of the average college or university tuition costs. For 2012, students will be eligible for a credit of up to $800 for the winter term. Starting in September, the grant will pay up to $1,600 per fall\/winter session at Brock. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>You are eligible if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are a full-time student in an undergraduate program. Teacher education students, graduate students and post-graduate certificate students are not eligible.<\/li>\n<li>It has been less than four years since you\u2019ve left high school.<\/li>\n<li>You are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person.<\/li>\n<li>Your parents\u2019 gross income as reported on their 2010 tax return was $160,000 or less.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have applied for OSAP this year, you don\u2019t need to apply for the program.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14442\" style=\"width: 301px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14442\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14442  \" title=\"Luke Speers, right, and Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, at a press conference on Thursday.\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/spearsminister.jpg\" alt=\"Luke Speers of BUSU, right, met with Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, at a press conference on Thursday.\" width=\"291\" height=\"311\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luke Speers of BUSU, right, met with Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, at a press conference on Thursday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Luke Speers, Vice-President of Finance and Administration at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.busu.net\" target=\"_blank\">Brock University Students\u2019 Union<\/a>, said the grant is an important step to reducing financial barriers to education. But he wants to make sure those who aren\u2019t receiving OSAP know that they have to apply to get it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working very hard to ensure that all students at Brock have an opportunity to take advantage of this new program,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The program is a trade off, he said. The government is eradicating three other programs \u2014 the Textbook and Technology Grant, Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship and the Ontario Trust for Student Support, worth about $78 million combined \u2014 to offer the 30 per cent one. But Speers said he can live with that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn net, there\u2019s still a lot of new funding coming into the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rico Natale, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/safa\" target=\"_blank\">Student Awards and Financial Aid<\/a>, said students who think they might be eligible need to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/ontario.ca\/30off\" target=\"_blank\">ontario.ca\/30off<\/a>. Brock is also distributing posters, bookmarks and other materials to inform students.
