{"id":13589,"date":"2011-11-18T10:54:50","date_gmt":"2011-11-18T15:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=13589"},"modified":"2011-11-18T10:54:50","modified_gmt":"2011-11-18T15:54:50","slug":"professor%e2%80%99s-research-has-potential-counter-terrorism-applications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/11\/professor%e2%80%99s-research-has-potential-counter-terrorism-applications\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor\u2019s research has potential counter-terrorism applications"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13598\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13598\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13598 \" title=\"Jeffrey Atkinson\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/atkinsonlab.jpg\" alt=\"Jeffrey Atkinson\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeffrey Atkinson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jeffrey Atkinson\u2019s quest to make vitamin E better for the human body has shown the potential to lead to new counter-terrorism measures while enhancing current medicinal uses of radiation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/mathematics-science\/departments-and-centres\/chemistry\/people\/faculty\/jeffrey-atkinson\" target=\"_blank\">Atkinson<\/a>\u2019s research recently became the focus of an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nature Communications<\/em><\/a>, an online journal of the reputable <em>Nature<\/em> series of publications.<\/p>\n<p>Ionizing radiation, which kills cells, is currently used in medical applications such as bone marrow transplants. But it can be detrimental or even deadly in uncontrolled situations such as a terrorist attack, or even prolonged exposure for flight crews on extended space missions.<\/p>\n<p>Atkinson\u2019s research group has created compounds that mimic the positive effects of vitamin E, also known as tocopherol, but are better absorbed by the body. The <em>Nature<\/em> article highlights the results of recent experimental models showing the synthetic compounds prevented irradiation-induced deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The synthetic compounds also have the potential to produce other anti-cancer and cholesterol-lowering properties.<\/p>\n<p>Atkinson, who will move his lab to the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/cairns-health-bioscience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Complex<\/a>, recently received a $33,000 U.S. grant by the Center for Medical Countermeasures against Radiation  to further his work developing the chemical compounds.
