If they raised enough, he\u2019d wear a tutu in class.<\/p>\n<p>The students raised $530 \u2013 enough to get Gabriel in a tutu, tiara and wig.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13537 alignleft\" title=\"David Gabriel, right, presents a cheque to Lucie Thibault, faculty co-chair of Brock's United Way campaign.\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gabrieltutu2-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"David Gabriel, right, presents a cheque to Lucie Thibault, faculty co-chair of Brock's United Way campaign.\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the whole getup from when I was an undergraduate student and had to go to a costume party,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought \u2018Why not?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel held a similar fundraiser about eight years ago, but \u201ca whole new generation of students has passed through since then,\u201d he said. His class of 67 students, he said, is \u201ca really good group\u201d and he knew they would rise to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>On the day he wore the tutu, \u201cat first they were in shock,\u201d he said. \u201cThen they laughed. They couldn\u2019t believe it. I got a couple of cat calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United Way is a worthy cause because of the number of community agencies it supports, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt focuses on a lot of good things all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Roberts, administrative assistant at the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/ccovi\" target=\"_blank\">Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute<\/a>, also helped the cause. A master pie chef, Roberts held a raffle that offered the winner a pie of his or her choice every month for the next six months. She raised $270. The winner was Caroline Starrs from the Department of Chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>The Needle Knockers on-campus knitting group is still selling tickets for its <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=12877\">United Way afghan raffle<\/a>. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. To buy one, email <a href=\"mailto:jo.stewart@brocku.ca\">jo.stewart@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Brock campaign has a fundraising goal of $115,000. So far, the Brock community has committed $98,219.<\/p>\n<p>United Way of St. Catharines and District has a goal of $3.1 million.
