BESRU recently formed to do research concerning the environment, sustainability, and social-ecological resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians, in general, tend to think that we are water-rich and that the issue of water can be ignored,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-environmental-sustainability-research-unit\/who-s-involved-\/faculty\/diane-dupont\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Dupont<\/a>, Economics professor and principal investigator for one of the grants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to other countries, Canada overall has an enviable amount of water, but there are still regions that suffer from droughts. In addition, if we think about attributes such as quality, and that quality is being lowered when we dump our effluents into rivers and lakes, then we are not as water-rich as we think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two project grants are worth a combined total of $110,000.<\/p>\n<p>Dupont is working with <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-environmental-sustainability-research-unit\/who-s-involved-\/faculty\/steven-renzetti\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Renzetti<\/a>, also a professor of Economics, <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-environmental-sustainability-research-unit\/who-s-involved-\/faculty\/tim-heinmiller\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Heinmiller<\/a>, an associate professor in Political Science, and <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-environmental-sustainability-research-unit\/who-s-involved-\/faculty\/ryan-plummer\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Plummer<\/a>, professor of Tourism and Environment, on the project \u201cLiquid Assets: Assessing Water\u2019s Contribution to Niagara\u2019s Economy.\u201d Over the next year, the team will document the role water plays in the Niagara community and economy. By doing this, they can plan to maximize water\u2019s sustainable contribution to Niagara in the future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13298\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13298\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13298 \" title=\"Steven Renzetti\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/renzetti-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Steven Renzetti\" width=\"240\" height=\"134\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steven Renzetti<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The team will hold one-day workshops to share the findings with regional government staff, elected officials and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Plummer is responsible for the other project, entitled \u201cClimate Change Impacts and Implications for Niagara.\u201d His team will develop a Niagara-specific climate change background document, which will summarize present climate change knowledge and activities. Regional government officials and other stakeholders will give feedback before the final reports.<\/p>\n<p>The reports, and resulting conversations and revelations, will help form a Climate Action Plan for Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>The project results will include real illustrations of climate change impacts in Niagara, said Ilze Andzans, project manager for WaterSmart Niagara, a program run through Niagara Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe anticipate that the impact of the project results will inspire those presently involved with climate change adaptation, while further motivating Niagara residents to take action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Postdoctoral fellow Julia Baird, who recently joined Brock following her studies at the University of Saskatchewan, will work with both teams. Plummer\u2019s team will also work with Jennifer Penney, past director of research for the Clean Air Partnership. Bradley May, Environment Canada and adjunct professor in Tourism and Environment, will also contribute.
