{"id":11983,"date":"2011-09-15T12:27:55","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T17:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=11983"},"modified":"2011-09-15T12:28:17","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T17:28:17","slug":"local-celebration-of-migrant-workers-at-brock-this-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/09\/local-celebration-of-migrant-workers-at-brock-this-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"Local celebration of migrant workers at Brock this Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11984\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11984\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11984\" title=\"Troy Ebanks is one of the local migrant workers whose story will be part of Sunday's presentation.\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/migrantworkers.jpg\" alt=\"migrantworkers\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Troy Ebanks is one of the local migrant workers whose story will be part of Sunday&#39;s presentation.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This Sunday, Brock students will team up with performers from Niagara\u2019s migrant worker community, St. Catharines-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextcompanytheatre.com\" target=\"_blank\">NeXt Company Theatre<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagaradancecompany.com\" target=\"_blank\">Niagara Dance<\/a> to stage an event focusing on the lives and experiences of migrant workers in our region.<\/p>\n<p>The hour-long community-based event, Growing Together: A Celebration of Migrant Workers, features the stories of migrant workers told in short theatrical scenes and film accompanied by dance and music.<\/p>\n<p>It takes place Sunday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m., in the Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be a vibrant and poetic representation of migrant worker life in Niagara,\u201d said David Fancy, professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/humanities\/departments-and-centres\/dramatic-arts\" target=\"_blank\">Dramatic Arts<\/a> and co-artistic director of NeXt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt features heartfelt and hard-hitting stories of travel, adjustment and the working realities of these workers, which are based on real-life testimonials from local farmers and workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of migrant workers come to work in Niagara every year. Hailing from Mexico, the Caribbean and elsewhere, they are an integral part of the region\u2019s annual $2.8 billion agricultural industry.<\/p>\n<p>The show is about an hour long and is suitable for all audiences.
