The pair are also using AI agents to help analyze the data and diagnose software problems.

As well as building their technical and research skills, the project has also allowed them to build connections with professionals in the field.

“One of the best parts of this project is our monthly meetings with Ciena engineers, including François Tétreault,” says Sehgal. “A team of around eight people at Ciena reviews our work and presentations, providing feedback on what we’re doing well and where we can improve.”

Patel, for example, developed a prototype that Ciena’s team used during a meeting. Their feedback helped shape the next steps.

“They brought their industry knowledge to the product and asked difficult questions that AI agents cannot solve right now,” says Patel. “Based on our discussion, they provided input on areas to improve.”

A significant highlight for Sehgal and Patel was being named first and second authors on a research paper, “TraceSynth: Generating Production-Quality Kernel Traces with Constraint-Guided Diffusion Models,” which they presented with Ezzati-Jivan at the prestigious 34th Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) International Conference on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE) in July. The paper is based on their work with Ciena.

Ezzati-Jivan says ACM’s FSE gathering is one of the world’s leading software engineering conferences, bringing together top researchers from universities and industry to share ideas and discuss challenges.

“Seeing Yuvraj and Sneh present our work with Ciena was a proud moment for me,” he says. “It gave them a chance to share their research with the wider community and see how it connects to real industry problems.”

Both Sehgal and Patel say their experiences at Ciena have inspired them to consider PhD studies to deepen their expertise and prepare for careers tackling complex challenges in industry.

For Ciena, Sehgal and Patel’s internships are more than work placements, says Engineering Director Jamie Sanderson.

“They give students a chance to learn how complex products work, investigate problems and apply their findings to make improvements,” Sanderson says.

Tétreault, an engineer at the company, says the partnership benefits Ciena as well.

“At the same time, those collaborations expose us to new ideas and perspectives coming from academia and the research community,” he says.

Providing students hands-on experience tackling workplace challenges while enabling industry to access new expertise and talent are among aims of Brock LINC, a research innovation office that provides research commercialization, entrepreneurship and industry partnership supports to the University and Niagara communities.

Brock researchers and industry partners interested in exploring a collaboration through Mitacs or other programs Brock LINC offers are invited to contact brocklinc@brocku.ca

Brock students Yuvraj Sehgal and Sneh Patel are already making their mark in the software engineering industry.

[13793,188,55,41,1
8737,5067,15311,567,348,7842,11546
