{"id":112414,"date":"2026-10-27T10:02:57","date_gmt":"2026-10-27T14:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=112414"},"modified":"2026-10-27T17:12:05","modified_gmt":"2026-10-27T21:12:05","slug":"eurovision-expert-explains-whats-at-stake-as-canada-names-its-short-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/10\/eurovision-expert-explains-whats-at-stake-as-canada-names-its-short-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurovision expert explains what\u2019s at stake as Canada names its short list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s national broadcaster has unveiled its short list of artists vying to represent the country at next year\u2019s Eurovision Song Contest, marking the nation\u2019s debut in one of the world\u2019s most-watched live television events.<\/p>\n<p>For Karen Fricker, the moment is both a long time coming and a chance to see a spectacle she has studied for 25 years with fresh eyes.<\/p>\n<p>One of Canada\u2019s pre-eminent Eurovision experts, the Brock University Adjunct Professor of Dramatic Arts co-edited the 2013 book\u00a0<em>Performing the \u2018New\u2019 Europe: Identities, Feelings and Politics in the Eurovision Song Contest\u00a0<\/em>and is co-editing\u00a0<em>The Oxford Handbook of Eurovision Song Contest Studies<\/em>, forthcoming in 2029.\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first watched Eurovision while living in Ireland in the early 2000s, I was captivated by a European cultural tradition that is both historically significant and fun, campy entertainment,\u201d says Fricker. \u201cWhile Canada\u2019s presence in the contest is geographically improbable, it\u2019s also a great opportunity for Canadian musical artists to reach new audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0five finalists, revealed by CBC during\u00a0<em>Eurovision Song Contest 2027: Canada\u2019s Choice<\/em>, include William Cloutier, Josiane,\u00a0R\u00eave, Talk and Tyler Shaw.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cbc.ca\/eurovision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadians will be able to vote online<\/a> for their favourite performer until the voting window closes on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 8:59 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n<p>The finalist will then go on to compete for Canada at the Eurovision Song Contest semifinals, taking place in Burgas, Bulgaria, on May 11 and 13, 2027, with the contest final on May 15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m impressed by the Canadian short list \u2014 this will be an interesting race,\u201d says Fricker. \u201cThat said, the CBC\/Radio-Canada has its work cut out in building an audience for Eurovision. The Australian broadcaster had been airing the contest for decades when it joined as a competitor in 2015.
