{"id":111443,"date":"2026-09-08T12:35:49","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T16:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=111443"},"modified":"2026-09-08T17:02:35","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T21:02:35","slug":"research-explores-slaverys-lasting-global-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/09\/research-explores-slaverys-lasting-global-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Research explores slavery\u2019s lasting global impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Behnaz Mirzai is at the helm of international research shedding light on human rights and the history of slavery in coastal regions of the Middle East, Mediterranean and Africa and around the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock University History Professor&#8217;s work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/routes-enslaved-peoples\">Routes of Enslaved Peoples<\/a> project \u2014 an international United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization&#8217;s (UNESCO) initiative\u00a0\u2014 explores the lasting impact of the forced migration of enslaved people throughout the modern world.<\/p>\n<p>As appointed co-ordinator of the projects Preparatory Committee, she manages the <a href=\"https:\/\/unescobrockproject.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO\/Brock University<\/a> project website in partnership with UNESCO, which acts as a home for the activities of the UNESCO network related to the African diaspora and the study of slavery and emancipation.<\/p>\n<p>By exploring ethnicity, identity and cross-cultural issues, Mirzai aims to mobilize knowledge amongst scholars and policy-makers about former slave communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish for a better world that is based on justice. As a Brock researcher and professor, I can help advance knowledge through education and bring networks of people together to examine, and share, deep insights into the complexity of the history of slavery and its global impact today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111452\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Behnaz-Mirzai-copy-1600x1067-1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111452\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-111452 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Behnaz-Mirzai-copy-1600x1067-1-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Behnaz Mirzai stands in front of a neutral background.\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-111452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Professor of History Behnaz Mirzai<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As part of the UNESCO project, Mirzai organized a conference entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giga-hamburg.de\/en\/events\/conferences-and-workshops\/entangled-histories-slavery-legacies-indian-ocean-mediterranean-middle-eastern-worlds?utm_source=linkedin&amp;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entangled Histories: Slavery and its Legacies in the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern Worlds<\/a> in partnership with the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and the University of Hamburg earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Myriam Cottias, President of the International Scientific Committee of the UNESCO Slave Route Project to deliver remarks at the event, which was supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connection Grant funded by the Government of Canada and the German government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridging intellectual activities and discussions on slavery and human rights between Canada and the global community was crucial, and we were grateful for the tremendous support received by German and Canadian governments as well as the University of Hamburg and GIGA,\u201d Mirzai said.<\/p>\n<p>For Mirzai, who moderated panels exploring human rights, slavery and the history of slavery in the modern period, the event offered a globally connected network of researchers and government bodies the opportunity to advance knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to talk about why slavery hasn&#8217;t ended.
