{"id":111413,"date":"2026-09-04T12:09:34","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T16:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=111413"},"modified":"2026-09-04T17:12:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T21:12:58","slug":"opinion-david-hutchison-discusses-approaches-to-addressing-school-absenteeism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/09\/opinion-david-hutchison-discusses-approaches-to-addressing-school-absenteeism\/","title":{"rendered":"Opinion: David Hutchison discusses approaches to addressing school absenteeism"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"the-content\">\n<p>Professor of Educational Studies David Hutchison wrote a piece recently published in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stcatharinesstandard.ca\/opinion\/contributors\/grade-threats-alone-wont-fix-chronic-school-absenteeism\/article_cb6dfa40-a467-59e3-aac3-a7297aa8d9e0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Catharines Standard<\/a><\/em> about a new provincial mandate that grades for all Ontario high school courses include participation and attendance.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-preview\">\n<p><em>&#8220;<\/em><em>A 10 to 15 per cent grade incentive is likely too modest to prevent those students who skip school and then hand in their assignments at the end of the year from continuing to do so. And a more stringent grading requirement would unduly punish the many students who avoid school for mental health reasons and other factors beyond their control.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p><em>High school absenteeism is a serious issue. Only 40 per cent of Ontario\u2019s high school students are meeting the attendance standard of no more than 10 per cent missed classes.
