{"id":110788,"date":"2026-07-14T11:23:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T15:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=110788"},"modified":"2026-07-14T11:27:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T15:27:09","slug":"tips-for-staying-safe-during-heat-waves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/07\/tips-for-staying-safe-during-heat-waves\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for staying safe during heat waves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With heat warnings issued for much of Ontario, Brock\u2019s Health, Safety and Wellness team is reminding the University community to stay safe as temperatures rise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/managing-heat-stress-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heat stress<\/a> can happen when the body gets too hot and can\u2019t effectively cool itself.\u00a0It\u2019s important to recognize heat stress early because it can lead to more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-national-defence\/maple-leaf\/defence\/2026\/07\/prevent-heat-related-illnesses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serious heat-related illnesses<\/a> (HRIs), such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, if left untreated. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worksafebc.com\/en\/health-safety\/hazards-exposures\/heat-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Signs and symptoms of heat stress<\/a>\u00a0include muscle cramps, excessive sweating, nausea, dizziness, weakness and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>High temperatures, humidity, sun exposure, heavy clothing, physical activity and inadequate hydration can increase the risk of heat stress.
