{"id":110639,"date":"2026-06-30T16:33:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T20:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=110639"},"modified":"2026-06-30T17:19:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T21:19:00","slug":"indigenous-co-curricular-program-renamed-odemin-wigwam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/06\/indigenous-co-curricular-program-renamed-odemin-wigwam\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous co-curricular program renamed Ode\u2019min Wigwam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a traditional Naming Ceremony on Brock University\u2019s campus, the co-curricular program formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/indigenous\/ode-min-wigwam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Plus<\/a> will be called Ode\u2019min Wigwam. The Anishinaabemowin name translates to Strawberry Lodge in English.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, which took place Friday, June 26 as part of Indigenous Peoples Awareness Week, introduced the name given as a sacred gift to the program by Elder Peter Beaucage.<\/p>\n<p>For Program Consultant Michelle Root, the name is a powerful reflection of the journey students take in the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strawberry\u2019s seeds are on the outside, which means its most vulnerable part is shown to the world,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause of this, the seeds spread easily so future plants can grow. In the same way, we hope students in our program will continue learning and sharing their knowledge to help future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110644\" style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-Indigenous-Plus-Naming-11-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110644\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110644\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-Indigenous-Plus-Naming-11-copy-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Invited guests seated in a circle of white chairs on the grassy knoll during the Naming Ceremony.\" width=\"349\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Friday\u2019s ceremony honoured the gifting and feasting of the program\u2019s name alongside the Eagle Staff and sacred items on the grassy knoll near Alphie\u2019s Trough.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Interim Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement Sheila Cote-Meek says it is important for Indigenous-based programs to be named using \u201cthe languages of the people of the land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames come with a story attached to them, and the names also attach to the importance of the work generated from the program itself,\u201d she says. \u201cThe work that goes forward within the program will carry out in a good way and be reflective of the name that was given to it, so this is a really exciting time for Ode\u2019min Wigwam as it continues to build.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Root says the journey to today\u2019s Naming Ceremony began at <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/01\/gallery-indigenous-cultures-celebrated-as-pow-wow-returns-to-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock\u2019s third annual Pow Wow<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students in <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/04\/connection-culture-and-career-readiness-indigenous-plus-celebrates-inaugural-cohorts-accomplishments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our first cohort<\/a> had expressed that they were interested in having a program name in an Indigenous language that also had an English translation,\u201d she says. \u201cThe name appears on their certificates of completion and many students include it on their resum\u00e9s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the Pow Wow, Root approached Beaucage to inquire about being gifted a name for the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElder Peter Beaucage has explained that the name comes with a spirit of its own. That spirit will now be with this program and with each student who journeys through it, supporting them during their time in the program and continuing with them long after they have completed it,\u201d Root says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110645\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-Indigenous-Plus-Naming-13-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110645\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110645\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-Indigenous-Plus-Naming-13-copy-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A woman holds a container of strawberries for another woman, seated on a chair, to select one.\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elder Grandmother Jackie Labonte carried strawberries around the circle to feast the program\u2019s new name. Seated to her left are representatives from Scotiabank, Financial Advisor, Investment and Retirement Tisham Mohammed and Business Advisor Mario Berro (BSc &#8217;23), who is also a current MBA student in the Goodman School of Business.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Abbey Keays of the Upper Mohawk Turtle Clan is a third-year Dramatic Arts performance student who took part in the first year of the program. She says it has allowed her to make deep connections with others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were many experiences that helped me connect more to my culture, but what meant the most to me was finally having more of an Indigenous community,\u201d says Keays. \u201cIt was people my age, in the same boat and with similar circumstances, who understood a part of me that some people don\u2019t really get to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keays was among the students in this year\u2019s cohort who advocated for a name change to reflect the program\u2019s true nature and the opportunities it creates to explore Indigenous identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program tries its best to cater to each students\u2019 needs \u2014 Michelle always asks us how we feel about things, and it\u2019s a genuine team effort with students when it comes to shaping the programming,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is a pressure-free zone where you get the chance to meet new people, learn new things and honestly, there is nothing to be stressed about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ode\u2019min Wigwam is generously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/08\/scotiabank-invests-in-future-of-indigenous-learners-at-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded by Scotiabank<\/a>\u00a0through their ScotiaRISE community investment initiative, which promotes economic resilience among underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n<p>Applications remain <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/indigenous\/indigenous-plus\/indigenous-plus-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open for applications<\/a> for the fall cohort.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a traditional Naming Ceremony on Brock University\u2019s campus, the co-curricular program formerly known as Indigenous Plus will be called Ode\u2019min Wigwam.
