{"id":110368,"date":"2026-06-12T14:08:26","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T18:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=110368"},"modified":"2026-06-12T14:08:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T18:08:26","slug":"goodman-grads-honoured-for-commitment-to-peer-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2026\/06\/goodman-grads-honoured-for-commitment-to-peer-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodman grads honoured for commitment to peer support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fatima Maqbool (BAcc \u201926) and Alycja Kyra Kinio (BBA \u201822, MBA \u201926) were determined to leave the Goodman School of Business community stronger than they found it.<\/p>\n<p>Each received a Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal in recognition of their contributions on Friday, June 12 during Brock University\u2019s 119th Convocation.<\/p>\n<p>Maqbool, a Bachelor of Accounting graduate, got involved at Goodman as a way to break out of her shell and make friends. She threw herself into student club opportunities and took on roles with increasing levels of responsibility each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing involved honestly brought my spark back and made me a much better and healthier version of myself,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew I would develop as a person, but I also found myself becoming someone who could make a difference and create meaningful change within the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her involvement in Goodman\u2019s largest competition team, JDCC, was triggered by a social media post that showed how much fun members had together. Her involvement with the club grew from being an academic delegate to taking on the roles of co-captain and finally serving as the team\u2019s godparent during her final year.<\/p>\n<p>Maqbool acknowledges taking the first steps to get involved isn\u2019t always easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to put yourself out there, but you always should,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat\u2019s the worst that could happen, you hear a \u2018no\u2019? Hearing a \u2018no\u2019 today doesn\u2019t mean no forever. That same door may open down the road, or a better one might open up. You just have to stay positive and persistent, because giving up is never an option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maqbool will be starting as a Staff Accountant at Deloitte in Toronto this fall as she continues her path towards her CPA designation.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to Goodman for an MBA after a stint in the corporate world, Kinio wanted to help current students fully understand the layers and depth of the business world \u2013 information she wished she had grasped earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe business world can be really transactional, I wanted to be very transparent and make the business world more approachable\u201d Kinio said. \u201cI had realized that everyone is on a different level when they start the game, and if we all had the same tools, that can help alleviate stress and equalize opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She volunteered as a guest speaker to Goodman student clubs, including the Goodman Consulting Association, but found her passion and impact came from the one-on-one interactions mentoring and advising students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes just showing up for people creates the ripple effect that you don\u2019t even always see yourself until you are out of the situation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kinio was also inducted into Goodman\u2019s Beta Gamma Sigma Honours Society following Convocation for her academic excellence during the MBA program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fatima Maqbool (BAcc \u201926) and Alycja Kyra Kinio (BBA \u201822, MBA \u201926) were determined to leave the Goodman School of Business community stronger than they found it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":21,"featured_media":110380,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,39,188,55,1],"tags":[154,2346,15173,1493,2852,594,2843,1117,1759,15157],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/110368"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/21"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=110368"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/110368\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":110381,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/110368\/revisions\/110381"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/110380"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=110368"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=110368"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=110368"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
